My son has a 1999 corsa b 1.0 litre 3 cylinder and has had it for a year now. Cheap insurance and seems to run on air, parts are cheap too. I won't commit to a mpg as I only occasionally drive it (normally when there's a problem to be sorted). But £20 of petrol seems to last him a long time.

If you can collect, settle & dry u(sed) c(ooking) o(il) from local food establishments
any
Peugeot/Citroen XUD engined vehicle will reduce your running costs considerably.

i was looking at the aixam 500 but i read its top speed was 60mph which probably means it only does 45mph up hill.  this would be dangerous on the motorway.  however it does 100mpg.  does anyone know if there is a slightly faster one or which the fastest model?

Ah I see, you want to have your cake and eat it lol.

Speed costs, faster you go & the faster you accelerate the worse the mpg.

I think then Axim500 is the "big" model for that range. The smaller one is a 400 I think.

The Axims aren't really cars, they're more a quad bike with a minimal body and ski doo gearboxes.

Much more than a slow potter a few miles down the road and they quickly break! Motorway trips/lengthy commutes will soon destroy them.

Correct servicing and oils are a must, apparently here in the UK they are often serviced with the wrong gearbox oil.

Any small non-turbo Peugeot diesel will serve you well.

The 306 is getting quite long in the tooth (1993 - 2002) and still had the XUD engine. or you might find a late model (1992) diesel 309, which was its predecessor on a K plate.

I have a 1995 405 diesel estate which gets 45mpg that I will part with for £500, but it will need re-taxing and MOT. Fitted with tow bar (£200), located in Surrey.

I'd avoid the Aixam, I've followed them in Portugal, they are barely better than a Reliant 3 wheeler. More use as a town only car for the senior citizen.

i think a peugeot 106 Diesel 1.4L is my best option.  ill take off the off-side wing mirror and airel to reduce drag and fit LED headlights.  i had one before and got 60mpg.  and i've heard 70mpg is possible if you really try for it.
