Hello all,
Basically i have to get 110VDC from a generator set converted into 110 or 240VAC to power a PC.
Have a few ideas but there all lots of work, so i was wondering how do you off gridders do it? are you all using 12/24 battery banks?
or is there a off grid inverter i can buy?

Thanks

stuart   i suppose there are several  ways ....

one is  get a MPPT solar charge controller ( that converts your 110 vdc down to battery volt like 24 volt)  a battery and an Inverter

but sounds not the right answer  Tongue

Billi

I think Ken is dealing with  110 vdc (or higher )  and inverts this in AC

Many on grid inverters will run at 110v DC - a PC will take all sorts of rubbish as the input - a cheap nasty virtually square wave one will be fine (if a little noisy).

Look inside the genny - is it rectumfried AC to DC ?

hang on - most BIG UPS's are 96V DC - which may be close enough. I think I have one

Stuart,

My inverters are 110Vdc input and 240V 50Hz pure sine output.

110V dc is a legacy standard for emergency lighting (E.L.) equipment.  Have a look for Amberlec and try and find some 15 year old E.L. kit.

Scrapyards are full of c2000 UPS systems and sealed lead acid battery systems.

Seek and ye shall find.

Thanks Chaps, the generator is on a steam traction engine.

Ken i was always on the look out for 110V emergency lighting gear in my last job, Because i could really do with a good 110VDC charger but only came across one system that was modern and in use  Sad
got plenty of 50v Jobie's from a large telecoms provider  Wink

Time is critical on this one, dropped on my lap at 6 and need it for Saturday, much as I'd like to use this as an excuse to find and buy a large UPS.
I'm assuming you have adapted a UPS for your 240VAC?

Guy wont have any grid power for the on grid inverter, unless using a 12v inverter and battery to fool the box into thinking its online.

Billi, I'll have a look for that as charge controller could be the best idea at the moment...... offline mode UPS currently on charge in case i cant sort this.

Which solar charge controller? only finding ones with 50/55v max input open circuit voltage?

Stuart unfortunately i do not know  how much  watt you want to invert  Tongue,
the charge controllers  that take over 110 VDC are big and pricey  as well you have to limit the power supply of the Generator so that the power available of the generator  is not higher than the controller can handle

this one can do upto 150 VDC    "Schams SMR500"  and is about 250 euro

the "outback FM 60" as well

or a DCDC converter first   Roll Eyes  perhaps     http://uk.farnell.com/sunpower/sds-100d24/converter-dc-dc-100w-24v/dp/1255001

or here http://deutronic.com/fahrzeugwandler/251-watt_data_de.pdf

But have no  idea if you can connect an Inverter then direct to the output of them without a Battery

Billi, will use a battery as a buffer on the output side, I'm lead to believe its for a PC will have more details when I get down there.

Sunpower have a 1000w unit in stock

and PDS design solutions have all sorts of goodies.

would still prefer a car alternator, battery and 240v inverter.

You may find a PC PSU that takes 110 volt dc, I have seen plenty of laptop power supplies that are 100 to 240 volt ac or dc so that may be a very simple solution?

thanks daftlad, I had been impressed by some of those laptop chargers. Only DC input PSU's i found were server ones, and no data sheets to make sure.

Thanks for everyones input, not had a call back about it so guess they've taken my ideas and ran with it themselves. Will however remember that for next time there desperate!
