Hello all,

with the relocation of my boiler to the garage I've had to install a PHE. Is there out there some hardware which could control the various pump speeds and motorised valves depending on data supplied via one wire temperature sensors? Currently all pumps are set at a fixed speed and valves opened if the heating is on but that does not allow the system to work as efficiently as it could.

I'm not aware of any off-the-shelf solution. I have a setup that controls pumps and valves based on 1-wire data, but it currently uses I2C for the switching. I will set up 1-wire remote switching at some point, but haven't got round to it yet.

For pump speed control I haven't looked atthatbecause I don't actually know how it is done in detail.  How do the controllers that do this work - do they just clip the AC going to a pump? This should work for bog-standard pumps but it won't work for the fancy new self-regulating ones. I talked to the Wilo pump man at Ecobuild and he explained how the smart pumps work: they have a lot of pre-programmed operating points so that the pump can move along an artificial constant flow 'curve' instead of merely along the intrinsic flow/head/power curve that a pump normally operates on. There is no obvious way to control such pumps externally (the really fancy ones have such an input but the consumer ones don't).
