I envisage you have a workshop or outhouse to do this in?

you need two 200/210 litre steel drums,
clip top are the best

Would suggest:
1) gravity through J-cloth supported in wire mesh/ holey waste bin/ over splatter guard
into drum 1

followed by
2) pumped through 10 inch filter housings holding 80 or 50 micron, then 10, 5, 1
into drum 2

Some put pressure gauge between each filter housing, to ascertain which filter is blocked.

Some wrap the biggest micron filter in another J-cloth to prolong its life.

Tam 105 pump from Machine Mart
mounted low down as it not self-priming
or the smallest Leo when available cheap enough.

Remember filtered uco should be used at a lower temp than it was filtered at,
as you have seen the consequences>

Will try to put a few links up.

Which vehicle?

You should alo dry your oil thoroughly after it has been filtered. It can easily contain 1 or 2 % water that cannot be seen, but can do serious damge to the metal components overtime.

I have read about drying -

1) heat it to boil off water
2) drop in water absorbing stuff.
3) pump thro' water absorbing filter

which - and why? Personally going for #1

Drums not a problem - free from local supplier. TAM pump or similar ok. How does one automate a gravity feed system? I envisage a setup where I pour in ikky goo into a drum, switch on pump, and come back x hours / days later to find a tank full of clean goo, and some filters filled with ik. OK - this is unrealistic - but the closer I can get to it - the better for me. Back to the question - 1000/10/1 or 1000/900/800/700 etc filters?

Best way i found of getting clean veg/fossil mix is settling.... and..... time.....
If you can leave your mix to stand for a week or more you will not need ANY filtering (ok-maybe just sieve the chips out..)  Then siphon off top liquid gold.
Mmmm.... I can hear your engine drooling from here...
