Is there such a thing as a DC output petrol / diesel generator that could be connected straight to a 24v battery bank for charging, I was toying with the idea of retro-fitting a commercial vehicle alternator to an old genny engine

yes i believe there is,
it must be quite an old idea, there was a chap with 2 for sale on here, perhaps you could look back through the posts you might come across it.i seem to remember something to do with army surplus.  and yes you could operate with a small petrol/diesel engine and an alternator, dont forget the ignition light between batt and alt.

I paid 500 euro plus 250 euro delivery for mine from Germany to Ireland .... with 3 running hours on the clock .... in combination with my 6 KVA offgrid setup , it made the best Backup generator , i ever had !

Ficher Panda do expensive ones.

I have a Lombardine air cooled 10hp with a 24v alternator and a Stirling smart regulator to charge mine.  Also use it to float heavy inverter loads.

Fit any old small engine to a car/lorry/boat/industrial alternator, hey presto a DC genny.

Should be cheap too if you use a used car alt.

If you do make your own just make sure that you fit a proper regulator instead of the one that comes with the unit. A car, lorry, bus, plant and even most boat alternators will NOT fully charge your batteries. Something like this http://www.sterling-power.com/products-altreg.htm though there are others. Most vehicle alternators have very crude charging regulation, working on the principle that most vehicles use most of their electrics when underway and their batteries are seldom discharged by more than a few % Just as car batteries are useless for renewable applications so are their voltage regulators.

Cheers, Paul

Try your local scrapyard and find an old BMW 7 series or something similar.
