A mate just pointed me to the O2 Joggler: http://yourfamily.o2.co.uk/o2familyjoggler/
A linux based touchscreen device with ethernet and wifi and USB... for 50 GBP.  It already has a healthy hacking community around it:  http://jogglerhacks.blogspot.com/ and
http://jogglerwiki.info/

Would make a lovely little data logger, or even solar controller if you add USB IO devices.

Some forum error meant stephend couldn't log in, and the moderator couldn't fix it.... so he decomposed and was reborn as stephendv  Grin

Mine turned up on monday! extrahappy

Great little box of tricks as it is for the price (50quid), but beware O2 are a bl%^dy nightmare to order from, told the bod on the phone last week my address details when ordering it, email came back confirming order with wrong address, striaght back on the phone (press 1, 2 4, 6 AAAAAAAA!!!!! etc) spoke to another bod in a different call centre, told me that they dont have a manual address input , their data base (Royal Mail) is full automated and based on the post code and cannot be changed by the operatives !"£$%^&**( therefore goods will have to go to the wrong address and their parcel people will flag up as a failure to deliver then you/I have to start all over again on the phone chasing and finally they can instructed the parcel people to deliver to the correct address.
All very good and well but if persons at the wrong address accept the goods and scribble on the electronic gizmo something that looks like the name on the box the driver happy Smiley, parcel bods have a delivery and therefore not their problem and you/I are out of pocket (you can imagine the conversation with someone in the call center who is not interested or bothered, "but sir the goods have been signed for so you have got them, there is a signature on the electronic gismo the driver has got blah blah", Me "but can you read the scribble", "err no but you've got the goods sir"  fume

If you walk up the road and confront said person with goods, if you know which address it is, they could say on F**k O$$. and some people can be like that, a nice free toy for them
Anyway did finally get the toy, but will not be ordering any more via phone or WWW , will only go into shop but shops all sold out last week again!!!!! surrender

Better stop ranting before the  police boot me off the forum.

Fred

PS That feels beeeetttterr

PPS Better start playing with Linux again (along with the ever increasing list of things to do)

The second email I got was that they were out of stock and delivery would be 2 to 3 weeks (after they had already got me brass), the next day got a text saying delivery would be in 24 hours help

Fred

Suggest you google O2 shops and if you can give a local shop a call

Hmm, that does look like an interesting bit of kit. Certainly can't complain at that price and it's got more than enough welly to be a controller. It's even x86 and thus avoiding the extra faff of using arm. I wonder how easy it is to get the I2C out. I really must do some work on the architecture for linux controllers. Anyone got enthused about writing a pretty front end yet using Wt or EFL or clutter? I guess I should write up my design notes.

I picked one up from the O2 shop in Chester today. There's a new offer on too, £50 for the Joggler or £45 for the Joggler plus an O2 router, tough choice.
Just got to try to boot with Ubuntu now.

Let us know how you get on with Ubuntu, I'm burning my USB now but have a permissions problem  Roll Eyes , I pick mine up on Friday I reserved it on the phone from my local o2 shop. Is the router a 'normal' ADSL ethernet one ? I'll remember to ask about that -  thanks !!  Smiley

It's a wireless ADSL router, I haven't unpacked it to investigate further.

Got a couple of these after Mr Gus originally posted the £50 offer was back on.

Missed out on the free router though! (suspect its locked to O2, and has to be returned when not used but could be wrong)

Got Linux running on it very easily using a USB stick. I used 'Disca's Ubuntu image and wrote the stick using Win32diskimager from WindowsXP. A matter of minutes later put the stick into the Joggler and power up and the joggler was running Ubuntu without issue. Happily browses with Chrome.

This post on the joggler forums explains in detail the quick way to do it with windows. http://www.joggler.info/forum/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=583

Disca image from here ..... http://www.fuzzylogic.co.uk/index.html

There is a further fix if you have sound issues IE crackly sound on speakers but so far mine seems ok.

There seems to be internal ports available if you want to dismantle, additional USB ports and also the possibility of a Pata. See the Wiki for pics etc. http://jogglerwiki.info/index.php?title=Main_Page
