Twas covered some time back on Mythbusters (discovery channel) and as the title of the show suggests nope it didn't, and yes it was "busted"   hysteria

Not sure why it wouldn't work.   Speed is fairly irrelevant if there is enough torque and solar heat input is  relatively easy.   A high temperature version  could  use water and thermal oil for heating but I suppose waste heat would be  greater at high temperatures.
