Hi all, This has been a long time coming, but, finally I have something to show.......just as a bit of back ground info on this, we have a 909ad farm house which has never had electric in it, we pump water from a borehole, wear jumpers when it's cold and use a gene when we need electric. I've been buying bits up second hand as and when I can find and afford them and the first few pics show how the install started last weekend in desperation for a BBQ we had (couldn't stand the thought of the generator running all night for a few lights and a fridge. So if I can work all this stuff out there should be some photos below. the blank canvas, I mean ply board All the ingredients few spanners later then the bulb works Strange feeling having electric without the noise of the generator, maybe only Billi and Frotter can appreciate that. Kind of eerie (sp) More pics coming up, including battery porn..... Jonah

After 1000years without electricity why bother now, it's clearly just a passing fad.

Knighty do not sink her boat with your heavy weight batteries perhaps you could convince her to go for an electric drive for the boat , to avoid another who complains about fuel costs Billi Amy like said fuel you have to buy and burn , electricity you can produce and save

Billi
I hope your impressed by flattery cos I think a lot about you, what you think and what you have to say, and ive been thinking about Knightys 48v electric motors, ........
I had the same idea about a week ago.
All this talk about oil companies being restricted by where they can drill, all thanks to the BP leak and the inevetable rising oil prices, .....maybe in 5 years time, diesel will be £1.50 a lt yet wages might have gone down
Its always an option but how would I do the maths to find out if an electric drive would power a boat this size?
The gearbox would remain, just substitute the engine for the motor. Realistically, the boat needs 40-50 hp
I know your a great fan of Panda Fischer electric drives, so thinking one step ahead, use the fork truck batteries, with the fork truck motor, but also have a 6 kva water cooled genny which could power the motor directly as well as feed the batteries

Hi all, silly question time now, on a 48v battery, what is classed as 75% flat? do I go by voltage? The victron has a low volt alarm at 44v but I don't think I keep running down that low. Come on guys, state the obvious and show me for the fool I am.... Jonah

Amy, I find it hard to provide constructive suggestions when you are considering risking your life on the merits of a clapped out car engine and a 12 volt electric system, however here goes 1) if you go for an electric drive, how will you recharge them - - someone somewhere is burning coal or oil to provide the power. 2) what makes you think you'll need 40 to 50 HP. From experience, a 10 ton vessel with a 36HP engine can easily do 8 knots, unless of course yours has the maridynamics of a floating brick. 3) if you're serious about going electric then get back to my original tongue-in cheek suggestion - buy a submarine - they come ready equiped with motors, batteries and recharge facilities jack

Oh Jack You realy are a wag, always coming up with funny comments and witisisms, you realy have me Im not sure which clapped out old car engine you had in mind, but I have a fully reconditioned and rebuilt XUD, something not to be sniffed at. If I were Superman, I would save the world, but alas, im a meer mortal, and cannot live on Crytponite. I do need a certain amount of carbon fuel, as do you. But to justify that, I live frugally and conserve as much energy as possible and so my conscience is more clear than a chinamans or an americans, or indeed the many millions of brits who have a house load of gadgets, halogen lamps, plasma tvs etc. Small steps Jack, small steps. I will get there to the eco promised land of plenty, one day If my vessel was a meer 10 tons, and restricted to canal life, I agree that 36 hP would suffice. 20 plus tons in a fast flowing river or at sea is a different matter and requires more power. Hmmmm, ......google search for 'Shallow draft submarines'
