I knows that name - I bided a fan thingy for my Sky box several year's ago which was meant to stir things up a bit from ee.  It still werks  :-)  Heems real hot on spellin's and apostra-thingy's.

(Got a good site though  ;-)  )

I know the name too... I think we share the same "Neck off the woods"...

Interesting posts but I confess that I'm more interested in what Crete can do to earn money and create jobs. I like the idea of harnessing sun and wind to produce electricity. But it will need a heck of an investment and sensible infrastructure.

For myself, I plan to install some panels on the roof to charge batteries and run an inverter. I can produce enough to run my computer system during the day and maybe some lights at night.

I can not recommend this site & it's contributers highly enough. Navitron have always given me very good service (But telephone them, rather than use email)

If you would like too, PM me & we can talk by telephone... I suspect you would not enjoy my dyslexic tapping's at the computer... Even if I might be above average intelligence... whistlie

What I've done a couple of times is send a personal message to the author asking them to correct the error.  These have been for cases where people have got units wrong and where leaving the error in place would likely contribute to further confusion on the subject.

I've had rather shaky net access for the last few weeks so haven't done this recently even when I've noticed problems.  E.g., use of "a/h" which is always wrong.  Maybe there's a unit with the symbol "a"; informally people use it for years (annum) but I'm not sure if that's actually officially defined anywhere, but that's not what's meant here.  The SI symbol for the amp is "A" (upper case, as are the first letters of symbols for all units named after people, though the names of all units start with a lower case letter).  In theory "A/h" could be correct for a rate of change of current but I've never seen it used appropriately.  The SI symbol for the unit of charge is "Ah" or, ideally, "A·h".

It's worth getting that right as writing "A/h" or "W/h" instead of "Ah" or "Wh" reinforces the misconception that amps and watts are, in a sense, amounts of something rather than rates of flow.

By the way, "it's" is short for "it is" or "it has" only; the possessive form of "it" is "its".  Using "it's" to indicate something belonging to "it" looks about as silly as using "hi's" for something belonging to "him".  Apostrophe-s is used for possession on nouns (amongst other things); "it" is not a noun, it's a pronoun.  "One" and "one's" puzzles me, though; is "one" not a pronoun?  "Your" and "you're" does follow the "it/it's" pattern.  E.g. "commenced with your punishment" is fine (though I'd drop the "with") but "Your doing good Billi" should be "You're" as it's short for "you are".

And, yes, it has been great to see Billi's improvements in his English.

"Your doing good Billi"

I have a very dry sense of humour, and when for instance someone starts talking about deafness, I immediately reply with 'Pardon'?

So in this thread context of grammar, Im bound to use bad grammar to push a point.
'Your doing good', instead of 'your doing well' is my humour.

On this occasion I wont mention the gender spelling difference between Billi and Billie

Doh, ....damn and blast, I just did.  hysteria

SatCure - go ahead. I'm all for proper English (within reason). I'm afraid I don't believe dhaslam's claim that poor spelling correlates with high intelligence. Mostly it corresponds with laziness, youth and/or inability to spell properly. Clearly there are quite a few good engineers with terrible spelling, but some of us can do both :-)

I think Amy's right that people who care about this stuff are almost all over a certain age (not quite all, but a definite trend), and in the long term we're fighting a losing battle. But sometimes it matters and is confusing: units are a good example. The wrong affect/effect can be confusing too.

English as a second language is a good excuse, as is genuinely doing your best but still not being very good, so some sensitivity is required if going round pointing out errors. I note that Billi and Amy have both now posted almost exactly the same amount: 3512. It's fair to say that Billi's have much higher infomation content on average.
