The cost of MAXIM products keeps on going up but 1-wire technology is now 21 years so it may be out of patent. Rding Tech has now produced a supposedly compatible with the DS9490 but it is listed at

http://www.pcsensor.com/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=64

This is about 1/3 the price of the MAXIM product (at c£5.00 rather than £15) and has an audio connector rather than an RJ11/12. I have ordered 3 so will let you know how I get on when they arrive from Hong Kong.

I wonder if they have IDs guaranteed to be unique.  Still, the chances of a clash are pretty remote.

If it does fully replace a DS9490, as claimed, only one is required per network so the ID doesn't much matter as long as it has the right family code

Well
The three USB 9097 1-wire adaptors have arrived and they seem to work and are recognised as DS9097U_DS9480 by OneWireViewer and DS9097U by LogTemp rather than DS9490.

They need a separated driver installing which makes the USB behave as a COM port. It comes up as COM6 on the USB port I am using.

In the spirit of keeping costs down I an old pair of headphones to get the appropriate jack plug (TRS connector).

Initially I could not get the dongle to work. The label on the USB9097 seemed to indicate that the tip was +5V, the ring the DQ line and the sleeve Ground. This was very sensible. However on wiring up I could not find any devices on the network. On investigation with a voltmeter I found that the tip and the sleeve were wired in the opposite sense – I got -5V initially. Swapping ground and +5V has done the trick. I will put a few HalfBees on and run LogTemp overnight to see how things go.

Sean

p.S. Eric - it does not seem to have an on-board ID. OneWireViewer comes up with zero devices.
