Hi I am currently building this machine and am coming close to the testing stage. i am using hugh piggotts book and was wondering if anyone knows what type of paint would be best to coat the vinyl ester resin on the stator and rotor.

here are a few pics:

Hi JohnB,

I was tempted to say Dulux, the stuff you can paint plastic gutters with but then I wondered about the heat and how much.

At full chat it may get warm, I don't know.  Are we talking aesthetics here or do you need to UV protect the resin?  Perhaps a final coat of resin with a colour pigment added.  I use this with West System epoxy all the time to good effect.

no so much aesthetic as to provide protection for the magnets and steel disk against corrosion. i decided to coat it with a bitumen paint but i like you idea of coating it with another layer of resid. i think i will apply this over the bitumin.

thanks for the reply

It won't work over bitumen. If it even goes off the flex in the bitumen will make it crack.
What is the 1800 in the title? Diameter?

I recently got the book, now started work yet, so will be interested to hear more as it progresses.
Where did you get that empty garage from, I haven't seen one of them since I moved in.

A bituminous coating is not a good idea.

To make the bitumen appliable it will be solvented.

The solvent has to 'come out'/evaporate, and the rate of evaporation
will decrease as the skin, in contact with the atmosphere becomes thicker.

The solvent in the still liquid 'paint' under the skin meanwhile is eating into you
vinyl resin encapsulant.

Which vinyl resin did you use, and what is the total surface area you need to paint?
I may be able to sort something out for you.

I've made two of these type of wind turbines the one I'm using now is 1kw with 3.6 dia blades hugh piggotts design,I coated the discs with bitumen and just left the stator as it can out of the mould and its been fine, running for just over a year.

ok so no new coat of resin over the bitumen then. yep, the diameter is 1800 mm.

i spent a week cleaning out the garage before i started.....a project in itself!!

Hi John,

just came across this on Hugh Piggot's blog http://scoraigwind.blogspot.com/2010/08/chris-olsen-writes-on-rust-prevention.html I have used the stuff Chris speaks about on a Land Rover axle and can vouch for it's durability.

Great pictures by the way, Cheers, Paul

here's a few photos of what i'v been up to since. i assembly the generator and tested it by turning it by hand. seemed to give the correct voltages according to the method oputlines in Hugh piggott's book.

http://picasaweb.google.com/101169264167409651171/1800WindTurbine#

I hooked up a recifier circuit to convert to DC, i have a question about how the o/p voltage works. I set it up outside on a relatively windy day on a temporary pole approx 12 ft off the ground, with no load connected to it, it produced a voltage of  42 volts at it's highest. the turbine is designed to be 24 volts so my question is; is it when the output wires are connected to a 24 volt battery bank (via a charge controller) that it will tie the o/p voltage to 24v, or am i completely wrong about this. i'm a bit sketchy about this area, could someone shed some light on this please.

Hi john

The voltage will drop once the turbine is connected to the batteris under load, from your pictures it looks like a windy spot, good luck.

so will the turbine reduce speed also when it is tied to the batteries, ie it will not be spinning as fast as it was when it reached 42 volts.

it is a windy spot indeed here, cant wait to get it mounted up at a proper height.

just wondering what people are using for batteries out there and where do they get them from, car not are not up it from what i understand and hugh says a forklift battery would be ideal. how about a marine battery.

John   nice job

I would try to find good second hand forklift batteries ( or buy new ones  tumble)

When i was looking i went trough the Golden Pages and rang the forklift v companies in my area for second hand ones
