Boohoo!  The Apple JVM always seemed a bit half ar$ed, can't remember the number of eclipse plugins that wouldn't work on OS X.  Just shows that Apple is leaning more and more into the consumer space, despite OS X being a very popular platform for developers.  I attended a Java development conference a few years ago and easily half of the attendees had macbooks or macbook pros.  I'm a very happy macbook pro user and it'll be a tough decision when I have to upgrade this beast.
I'm beginning to get the impression that the appstore is now their core product and OS X will merely become just one more consumer platform used to empty your pockets into the appstore.

Now that Java is shipped under a properly Free licence I assume there will be no problem using other JVMs than apple's? I have no experience of Macs post 1989, but surely java's not going away if you want to carry on using it?

The whole corporate-approved app store thing is a massive point of control you'd be best off having nothing to do with. If the platform doesn't really work any other way then understand that it's no longer a computer under your control - it's under the app-store owner's control. Apple love Freedom, as we all know, so nothing to fear there :-)

As you say it depends if the app store mentality extends to the desktop.
