Hi Folks, Having been given the blessing of our Admin team, I'd like to share with you all that this Movember I've decided to donate my face to raising awareness about prostate cancer. My donation and commitment is the growth of a moustache for the entire month of Movember, which I know will generate conversation, controversy and laughter. I started on Friday 5th so I'm just over a week in and will post a photo for you all to laugh at....... Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. One man dies every hour from the disease in the UK. This is a cause that I feel passionately about and I'm asking you to support my efforts by making a donation to The Prostate Cancer Charity. To help, you can either: - Click this link http://uk.movember.com/donate/your-details/member_id/968228/ and donate online using your credit card or PayPal account . Or, - Send cheques and CAF vouchers (made payable to 'The Prostate Cancer Charity Re Movember') directly to The Prostate Cancer Charity, First Floor, Cambridge House, Cambridge Grove, London W6 0LE. Be sure to include the person's name on the back of the cheque. Just donating £1 will help to make a difference. The Prostate Cancer Charity will use the money raised by Movember for the development of programs related to awareness, public education, advocacy, support of those affected, and research into the prevention, detection, treatment and cure of prostate cancer. For more details on the impact Movember is having please visit http://uk.movemberfoundation.com/research-and-programs. Thank you in advance for helping me to support men's health. Ian Neale

A close friend of mine also has prostate cancer.
Whilst I'm not a big 'alternative medicine' person, I do know that a lot of 'alternative' techiques are substantiated or demonstrated by scientific experiment or investigation: Scientific works have shown the following foods to have very beneficial effects on fighting Prostate cancer: Apples (the active chemical is in the apple skin -so don't peel your apples), and mushrooms shiitake, maritake and reishi
It's also a treatable disease if it's discovered early...but there aren't many symptoms. It is easily detected by a blood test for PSA - so no unpleasant screening procedures. Every man over 50 should be tested, and is entitled to a free test (just go and see your GP), but because of the cost of a full-scale screening programme, they only give it to those who ask.

I spent the weekend with family up in Derbyshire and as expected, everyone had a good laugh at my top lip topiary. It was all made worthwhile by the additional £35 sponsorship that I came away with.
Thanks to all those who have donated so far, I'm now up to £192 so will hopefully beak the £200 barrier before the week is out :{)

Hi Tigger, You have broken the £200 barrier !
My father had prostate cancer and died relatively young at 52. I have read many studies and research on the subject. One of the most thought provoking was :-
Prostate cancer understand, prevent and overcome by Proffesor Jane Plant CBE ISBN 1-85227-188-4
When different countries are looked at for prostate cancer(table3.2 page 98 year 2000):-
China 1.7 cases per 100,000 population U.K 40.2 cases per 100,000 population USA 104.3 cases per 100,000 population
Jane tried to find out why the chinese had such a low incidence of prostate cancer. genetics ? culture ? environment ?
Chinese who move to the west still have a low incidence. But second generation tend to have a similar incidence to their adoptive country.
In the end the main difference was that native chinese ate hardly any dairy products and the natural growth hormones in the milk had an effect in the west. In the USA dairy growth hormones are allowed to be administered to both dairy and beef cattle and some gets into milk and meat.
Jane is a scientist who looks at the big picture. She then works back to find the root causes.
Ivan I also saw a German study that found pumpkin seeds were as effective as the then current prostate drug used.
Regards Richard

Richard,
Sorry to hear of your loss, it has been quite frightening how many people have said their father/brother are/were affected.
You are a gentleman, thank you for your support.
Ian.

Stats I have heard is that 25% of males die with (but not necessarily from) prostate cancer. Not sure how true that is.

I also read that 75% of men over 65 have prostate cancer. It's almost a foregone conclusion, though as Ted says, many will die of something else. I think it's not generally an aggressive cancer, so it is something that you can live with. My friend who has it, has been told there's no hurry to remove it. They keep a check on the cancer markers in his blood with monthly blood samples (testing for PSA, I presume), and will recommend surgery when it gets to a certain level.

As an alternative to invasive surgery, which carries a huge risk of leaving the patient with erectile dysfunction, shrinking the prostate with estrogen is a prefered method of control. The atrophy of the gland deprives the cancer cells of the much needed blood supply.
Unlike testicular cancer and melonoma, which is very agressive, prostate gives the patient more time to explore the non surgery options, but like all cancers, early medical intervention is vital.
So, if your flow is slowing, get it checked out.
