Slight correction CTE our silver towel rail is keeping our bathroom nice and toasty provided we keep the door shut!

"That's why Towel rails are Silver. So that when there is no towel on them, they do not waste heat trying to heat the bathroom. Its the best way for T-Rails to be.
They only heat things which touch them directly, like a towel."

Really?
And I always was of the impression that "radiators" actually transferred most of their heat output by convection.

"Thats also why you get a nasty thermal shock when touching them, they do not radiate a warning of the warmth you are about to touch, whereas with a conventional radiator you get a brief warning before touching."

That beckons experimental verification. I bet you ten pence that you can't feel the difference between a painted towel radiator and a chrome specimen, without touching them.

Let's see what the "heating element" (could be a radiator, could be rail) producer says about heat output, for instance Stelrad: http://www.stelrad.com/UK/docs/lifestyle_brochure.pdf

Let's pick two devices of similar size and shape: (1) radiator, Concord vertical, 1800 mm tall, 588mm wide, rated output 1040W at a deltaT = 50°C. (2) towel rail, Esprit, 1800x550mm², output: 1056W (white finish) and 824W (chrome finish).

So, as you said, the chrome finish reduces the heat output. Hey, by 20% !

Do you want to stick to your interpretation of "So that when there is no towel on them, they do not waste heat trying to heat the bathroom. Its the best way for T-Rails to be." ?

94W ! I'm glad it's not wasted when there's no towel on it.  Erm, when it's bare, where exactly does the energy go ?

David,

I'm completely with you that the towel rail -- radiator discussion is pointless. But do you know why I started it? It's sweeping phrases like "That's why Towel rails are Silver. (...) Its the best way for T-Rails to be." and then  banghead -ly sticking to it that drive me crazy.  I just used this little example to illustrate why some people in these forums may find it difficult to lead a normal discussion with you.
Please don't get wrong, I'm not out to get you, I'm not interested in any (karma or other) fight. I am, simply, interested in friendly, level-headed discussions.

So does a chrome towel rail give out more heat when it has a towel on it due to conduction, or less due to insulation? Grin

A meter  on the electricity usage might tell something. More likely the oil or water temperature  just gets higher or lower depending on  whether the rail is covered or not and the input remains the same,   eventually the  thermostat will control the temperature so it may be difficult to reach any conclusion.

Steady on, I can't follow all these posts that appear and minutes later disappear.  tumble

I notice that all of CTE's posts in this thread have magically disappeared, leaving some of those that remain a little high and dry. Klaus, I think you did get to him in the end. extrahappy

This is an admission of what could be called, in other words, 'winding someone up'.  fight

Jonathan, I wish I did, Alas, apparently I did not.  Undecided
