Saw a report similar to this one in my local newspaper about reducing coal consumption. Fibretech claims that their product – a metal pad which sits on the grate of a coal fire – can increase the burn time of an open coal fire by up to 30%. Sounds interesting. Apparently, the company is developing another mat to use with wood burning appliances and barbecues.

hi gb484,
this is not a new idea, some years ago they were flogging a s/s plate,,180mm x 100mmx12mm,, it just sat in the bottom of the basket and prevented the fire from burning in the middle from underneath, the fire then had to burn around the edges and so the boiler got more benifit,
one of the other advantages it had was that it saved the bars on the basket from burning out too quickly ,especially if you were burning slack, yes it works but make sure you keep it to the front of the basket and allow at least 50mm at the back for the draught to pull the heat as evenly as possible over the surface of the boiler.

What a rip off. 10 quid and it doesn't last long. Bit of tinfoil would do that but if you are burning less coal you will still get less heat.
With all these grants around nobody has suggested one to fit stoves in place of open fires. Got to be far more ecofective (new word!) than PV.
