I took out my waterwheel last week with a view to replacing it with a DIY low head turbine (very low head in this case).

Here is the picture of the wheel in action

http://flic.kr/p/47DeRQ

- It's been in for about 4 years and generated between 20 and 100W continuously with the exception of probably about two months at the peak of summer. When the stream floods the level rises above that of the waterwheel an as it has been in for 4 years I was getting worried about the holding frame giving way. This could lead to a flooding situation on my neighbours property for which I did not want to be liable so I have decided to replace it with a low head turbine.

I have started the low head turbine and hopefully will finish to a testing point tomorrow. The turbine itself is based on an industrial paint stirrer and the rest has been made out of 2mm sheet aluminium. The draft tube has just been bodged up at this stage to get it running and is made of geofix buckets cut and shaped to make a cone. The total head will be about 26 inches. I will be using a slow rpm (200) PMG from windblue power. Hoping for 50W but would be happy with 20 or so as it would be 24/7.

where did the drive chain and associated sprockets come from ? - am looking for something similar

there's a heavy duty version of your wheel on ebay currently

are you going to have the water come along the sheet of metal and then down the hole - where the paint stirrer will be spun ?

don't want to rain on your parade.... but you'll get a lot more power if you mount the paint stirrer inside a length of pipe.... even better if you have a larger pipe, and then reduce the size just before the paint stirrer.....

the water has a lot more momentum inside a pipe that it does falling through the hole in the sheet metal....

edit:
bit quick and dirty, but here's a diagram to show what I mean....

if you have decent fall after the turbine, you can extend the exit pipe so more water is syphoned through.... add more "head" to the system...
(same goes for the incoming water)
