"Oooh - Exeter is quite a trek. I live in S.E. London ;-(... Though not completely impractical (but slightly hypocritical of me to drive 400 miles whilst making a film about reducing CO2 emissions!)"
Stop beating yourself up about it!
You want to make a film. If there is material in your back yard fine, if no you will have to go to where the material is. Ultimately if your film is successful you will save the world loads of CO2 et al. Plant a tree if it bothers you, that seems to be good enough for politicians!! All joking apart, at least you are thinking about it.
"(Incidentally, I figure we should plan the filming in the public forum so others can suggest things they'd like to see filmed etc... or rather, maybe we should plan the details by e-mail so we don't take up other peoples' time (and bandwidth)... who knows... ;-)"
I'd suggest you start a new thread. Those that aren't interested can then easily ignore it.

Frotter, How long do you last on your batteries alone and how long does it take to charge them up from your genset. I also agree with Kristen on opening up a new thread to discuss Frot TV but I am sure as wind is energy you will get a thousand and one variations to the theme.

Sorry - only short reply as i am in an institute for partially sighted in Transylvania atm...... My battery setup is not fully operational as yet. it seems to run our house for about 12-18 hours once nearly fully charged. i havent run a proper full charging cycle using the gen yet but it puts about 80% in after 3-4 hours running from 'flat' (45 or so volts). Thats at around 80 amps.... will try to check in again but may not be till weds or thurs. Cheeky girls ahoy! XX

Hmm - sorry for enormous silence. Beloved Moovan (as seen in my profile pic) decided to have a 'rest' on the M5 - and graze the hard shoulder after having dumped all moo-fluids mixed up in a steamy goo with a loud 'pop'! Been panicking like mad to try and get/clean/repair replacement lump. Currently sat on a table in my driveway..... Anyhoo... Been a bit sidetracked by the arrival of a big parcel...... Ooo! wonder what it can be.... Steady now....... Speccybloke looks nervous cos he knows it means more work for him! Blimey! its a load of glass thingys! Mmmmmm! PV panels......... And yeah - credit card is scr*ewed, mortgage is melted, nest-egg busticated! Lets get harvesting them photons!!!! XXX

Excellent progress frotter.... I plan to harvest more photons. It will be really interesting to compare the bang-for-buck between PV and wind.

Step forward - solar panel frame-building party! (Stoveboy, Demonsaxboy and Speecybloke - pictured with trusty venerable work vehicle...) Less posing, more digging if you please..... Makin mud pies, spose we should get the mixer out really.... I relented - to save Speccyblokes biceps the grumbly mixer of doom was fired up. Luvly frame seen here with coating of splendid Black Insect Death. (mmmm, creosote...) That looks neat dont it? Gotta luv that armoured cable! XXXX

suggest some of those weird security head screws for mounting - makes them a little more difficult for people to pinch

Frotter,
What voltage and wattage are your panels? It looks like you have purchased six, are they Navitron panels? It looks as if you are erecting them near the wind turbine, do you have a special reason for siting them with a longish cable back to your power house? Keep up the good work, John.

200w wind turbine grid tied, 1x175w PV grid tie or to batteries, 2x55w PV to batteries, 24vx440ah battery bank. 3.5Kw grid tie (14xSanyo 250w facing 160degrees at 80 degrees inclination, Aurora 3.6 inverter), 2xflat panel water heating (for over 30 years )

Yeah - think i will get some security screws sometime...... The panels are 24v 180 watt. (my system is 48V). I looked all over the place at prices for panels (even USA cos of the exchange rate...) and these were the best deal i could find of panels actually in stock and available immediately.. They ended up costing me around £3300 inc vat and delivery. From a company off Eb*y. The reason for the siting is - trees and house. Nearer the Chernobyl Control Shed of Power the panels would be shaded at certain times. Especially in winter. The cable is 10mm2 armoured - about 35 metre run, dont think i lose too much power. Have seen peak current into batteries of 17 amps at about 55 volts. 935 wattsish. not too shabby. Dont know how accurate my comedy bakelite ammeter is though....... More pics laters if i get round 2 it.

Now look Speccybloke, you need to put some walls on that shed before you start mucking about wiv bits of wire. Told 'im loads of times. Pfff!! Yay lookit them luverly panels! All ready for some sun... pity its getting dark.... Quick! - bring the voltmeter......... 57 volts?? well we were excited but not really any proper light to speak of by this time - never mind sun! But the following morning once the sun was up a bit.......... Thats more like it! Ok well this may be the last lot of piccies for a bit - muddy Glasto looms. Need time to load essential supplies into (now running - yay!) Moovan. Waders - check snorkel - check diving bell - check dinghy - check (continue until funny...) XXXX
