Doh! - yeah sorry about lack of updates.. real life really annoying me by heaping things to do up in the corner.....

Well we ran the setup on auto for for a day or two and we had clearly made things better. Doing some measurements though revealed that we were still losing over 1kw between generator and batteries. Quite a lot in heat given out by the giant rectifier inside the charger box and the rest seemed to be heating up the alternator to an alarming temperature. We think this is still due to power factor correction and trying to run a single large inductive load from a fairly small generator - bah! Eventually the generator became unhappy and reluctant to strike up again! Double Bah!! Head scratching time AGAIN. Meanwhile - our stock of free lard is building up. There are stacks of it EVERYWHERE!
This is one of several.....

So while alternate strategies are formulated we (ok, Speccybloke actually...) distracted ourselves by making a super insulated lard fuel tank.

Gotta luv the gaffa tape....

And here it is in place a-doing its thing. Please note door for gnome caretaker to check fuel level.

Much better than wrapping it in an old duvet.......

More nonsense soon, hopefully!

XX!!

Frotter, List

Transformer/Rectifier battery chargers have notorious power factor.  Have you thought about a dc genny?

What is your system pack voltage?  I have a compound wound 4.8kW dc generator capable of 60V - so good for 48V system.

Hehe - he's not kiddin.....   Roll Eyes
Only i had no idea of such arcane Sparky Knowledge before. My battery is 48v. We have been thinking of LOTS of different things since the recent dismal events. Latest is a couple of 30 amp switch mode power supplies i got from ebay for £60. just lashin it all up currently. (pics soon...)  DC genny sounds good - could be interested in that! Our unit doesnt have a lot of room inside, the standard alternator is pretty slim so butchery may be required... How does yours couple and how many £'s do you need for it?

It's 2800rpm 6.3V @80A.

PM me and we can discus getting it over to you - I can email you some pics

Doh

It's 2800rpm 63V @80A.

So basically 4.8kW

Those dammed  decimal points creeping in again.  Grin

Ok here we are again then.....
Lot of head scratching been going on. We came to the conclusion that the big dumb forklift charger was killing the poor generator so out it went! In the place it was mounted we put a heated lard-melting shelf for keeping a tub of lard runny in readiness for filling the main tank. The ally plate has two small 25w heating elements bolted to it - keeps the lard about 60-70 degrees C.

You can see the pickup lance ready for insertion and under the shelf a Facet fuel pump for transferring the runny lard into the proper tank below. We made a big insulated 'crash helmet' to pop over the top to keep it toasty.
Meanwhile...... back at the 'how to charge the s*ddin battery' dept - i found a pair of these luvly 48 volt switch mode power supply/charger units on Egay for £60! Bargain. These can chuck out up to 35-40 amps each..... seen here tickling 50amps or so in. Brilliant!

Sooo.. we tinkered about with the max power output presets to get all we sensibly could from the genny and set it to auto run from low voltage signal from the inverter.....

On coming back from work the following evening the generator was running and had clearly been going for some time as everything was mad hot! It was also far from happy....  Sad  Seems we had set the maximum load too high. One charger was dropping in and out as the genny couldnt keep the voltage up under the excessive demand. the gen itself was cycling in a most unhappy way - voltage dropping out and banging back up again all the time. We turned it off quicksharp and left it to cool for a bit. On starting up again the voltage would not strike - only eventually doing so weedily if the engine was revved like mad - doh!
We tried flashing the alternator in case the magnetism had been lost and it did get a bit better but the voltage would not rise above 190 or so.
Only one thing for it i suppose - take everything to bits!

I took the rotor to a clever armature rewinding chappy who tested it and declared one half of its windings shorted to the rotor. B*gger!!
Estimate for rewind around £400. Double b*gger!!
Plans now being thrown around to mount our nice Kubota engine on a frame and lash it to a different gen/alternator...... watch this space.
As if thats not enough - in all the 'excitement' a tub of lard was forgotten about and left in the Lardinator for 3 days at nuclear temperatures. There could only be one possible plastic tub-melting outcome........

TRIPLE B*GGER!!!  Shocked

Hehe - yeah the only slightly good thing about the Lardslick was that it was mostly like scraping up fudge. I think runny gunge wouldve been way messier... Tongue
Currently looking at sourcing a pair of 24v 90amp truck alternators.

Frotter, you are an insipiration to us all !

After 3 hits like that most of us would be looking for the rope and a low branch rather than new alternators Tongue

Keep 'em coming

Just out of interest, what are the insulating properties of melted chip fat? Might we have discovered a new alternative to rockwool?

Hmm... it would be a way to use it all up. And in the summer when its red hot in the attic most of it would melt and soak into the fabric of the building. Its so evil to handle it must be deadly poisonous. I feel a patent hatching.

Ok so - some tinkering has been achieved! The alternator from our genny is now sat out in the rain all sad and busticated. As is the jumble of random bits of metal and stuff left over after dismantling the padded box on wheels.....
It is a really neatly designed and built set, all nicely bolted together and fitted cleverly into a pretty small space. Shame to have to ruin it...  Grin

Our nice Kubota engine is now sat all exposed, naked and goosebumpy on a set of frankly inadequate trestles picked up at the tip. As Speecy Bloke approaches in his vinyl gloves, it must wonder what its fate will be......  Shocked

Some eviscerated components randomly stacked on a garage floor near me, yesterday. Took ages to set that blummin lot up, so it did. Roll Eyes

Meanwhile, back in the proper world. LOOK OUT! we're under attack (again) from the dreaded evil Dr Serpula Lacrymans (dry rot to you and me  Angry ) Straight to brown alert!!

What the heck am i doing b*ggering around with lard related things when such wickedness needs to be dealt with? you may well ask.
Oh dear.

Indeed,

I did find myself in deepest Devon yesterday afternoon, and happened upon the following suspicious characters who were loitering with intent and in possession of an offensive "Clarke" mig welder.

I swapped a wonderful  4.8kW compound wound generator for a plastic container full of lard.

Seemed a good idea at the time. Grin
