quote I would really like it if someone used our experiences to build a super economy setup with a £10 alternator from a scrappy and a scavenged diesel lawnmower engine. Come on someone! I know yer out there!!! frotter, fascinating thread ! http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f47/TomEA/pict0016.jpgits a 10 quid alternator, but deisel lawnmowers are a bit rare, so had to make do with a yanmar 5hp. i think its direct injection because it starts first pull whatever the weather but i bet a lister is easier on the ears tho !

We had a short diversion into rockwool territory last week. He of Assisted Vision was hanging around in B&Q whorehouse and spotted 170mm rolls on a bogof deal. (buy one get one free). Quick bout of measuring in the belfry of Frot towers and 120 sq metres was snapped up for around £200! Bargain! And yes - Stoveboy pressed into the fun to boot. Works a treat - Frot Towers all cosy now. Yay! Meanwhile... we have mostly been engaged in constructing SpeciWan's uber exhaust heat exchanger for stealing exhaust therms away into our inner scrotums within Frot towers. Mmmm - shiny... Expensiv, copper, innit? This bit was a bit fiddly....! It is a beasty though innit? There must be 3 or 4 kilos of solders in there - bonkers! It will eventually be encased in a section of double walled insulated ally flue from the tip and stuffed with left over bargain rockwool. I luv soldering, me. Blimey!! XX

I'm tempted but worried about the noise. My shed has 3/4in thick tongue and groove walls (grand-dad had contacts in the building trade ) and 2in Rockwall insulation then 6mm ply, so it might keep the noise down. But I haven't a clue were I would get a small, scrappy diesel. -Paul

Maybe an old cement mixer...But I think these engines get a very hard life... I'm know thinking small 4 stroke lawn mower engine & wood gas... I've already liberated a 4hp Briggs & Stratton from the uni skip, along with an old fire extinguisher case as the development combuster... It's all that Ken's fault... Should be good enough to burn the shed down with....

Well if yer talkin wood gas in petrol engines, a 5hp Honda should be easy enough to find cheap. Pretty ubiquitous, easy to start and seem to go on for ever. We have one on a go kart. always goes first pull (even after running out of oil and siezing once...) never had a spanner to it. If there is a commercial vehicle/equipment/tool auction site anywhere near you they are normally stuffed to bursting with tired lawnmowers for naff all dosh. Local tip even - just have a chat with the Polish bloke...

As Frot says, Lard is Well Hard, especially in this weather. I nominate Frot as our forum's own "Lardware Engineer" Ken BTW. Frot - it's still there in the back of my car where we loaded it 8 weeks ago

Ahem - many thanks. Position gratefully accepted! Haha! - You've not managed to squeeze it into the Bigboy (Lister) yet then? C'mon, its a challenge in these temperatures..... Ken - did you or Ivan manage to use that wee scooter back axle for starting one of your great industrial engines? I would be interested to see that. Our lil Kubota is buzzing away in Chernobyl as i type. We have been on Frotpower continuously for 2 weeks so far. Only grid contribution being toward the nasty 9kw shower. Even in this new cold world we have only had one failed autostart due to smidgeons of lard not completely flushed out on shutdown. Ultimately we want to replace ancient giant Calor gas (yikes expensive ) boiler with wood stove/back boiler/heat exchangers on engine and exhaust. Result hopefully will be toasty Frot Towers courtesy of lard and free firewood from local tip and/or our own firewood once the 150 pathetic sticks i have inserted in't ground get all big. (not holding breath on this one...) More pics soon you poor fools....... XX
