I know I said you had nothing left to tinker with, but this is extreme.
Windy again tonight. Better strap that windsave down to the chimney tonight.

Ye Gods Frott
Bad luck, just lucky nobody caught the missing blade. I would have been distraught. Maybe Chinese 8.8's should be classified 7.8?

Frot,
Sorry to hear about your loss.
Losing one blade would leave the remaining pair so out of balance that they would literally shake the whole structure to pieces. Its not the bit that flies off that does the damage, it's what's left behind.
Your first photo of the blade housing, shows that the actual casting/fabrication has cracked.

Frot,
destruction on a shocking, even epic, scale.
Commiserations.

HI Frot,
Just curious can you have a look at the slip-rings for any sine of damage. By looking at the carnage it looks like there was no load on the turbine and it over-spun.

Heh! - thanks for all comments.... We will, of course, be having a 'look in' at the slip rings etc. But say it did runaway off load, are these not supposed to furl anyway to save doom..? Ivan? Before dismantlage i will measure from Chernobyl to see if the line is open circuit..... Updates later - third blade still not found.... X

Frotts, what a mess, glad you are all ok. Nice to read you are keeping a stiff whatsaname,...... er upper lip that's it. Glad to know that your erection skills remain un-tarnished. Does this mean it's the giant frotty hamster wheel of power for Stoveboy for the next week? At least you've got all that LARD to be going on with, (unless the wind's nicked that). All the best and good luck with the rebuild. The Panda.

Cheers, bud! I am leaning towards rebuilding it with shorter blades, if they are available. Less output but hopefully less doom too! I am hoping Ivan may have some input on this at some point.. words of wisdom etc... I am wondering if the 500w hub and blades will fit the shaft. If so do Nav have any in stock? Incidentally we are leaning toward bolt failure as our first cause of doom. This is the hub where the wirecutter blade lived - bolts sheared, plate gone nout left... As you can see here, the other blades are still clamped in - just flung away from the centre. Evidently special bolts were used made of that quality metal that BL used to make Morris Minor door handles out of... So we walked right up onto the hill with binocs today to go blade spotting....... can you see it..? Nope, neither could we! Anyone know if the 500watt hub fits the 1kw then...? X

Must've been some severe wind to cause the bolts to shear. Have you checked the continuity in case you've got an open-circuit alternator, perhaps leading to over-spinning and high centrifugal forces, as suggested by chaosman? Furling protects against high average wind speeds. It can't react fast enough to protect against sudden gusts, and certainly can't do anything about overspinning due to lack of load - you can overspin in relatively light winds if you don't have any load.
Give the office a call, should be able to sort out the replacement parts you need. I think we have some shorter blades that will fit the 1kw hub - John at Navitron should be able to tell you. You can't fit a 500W hub, as far as I know, as the shaft size is smaller.

Thats a Sillage Clamp... A big pile of bovine Sourecroute, with a plastic sheet over it to keep it nice & pickly... The tyres are to stop the plastic sheet from blowing away...

This is the hub where the wirecutter blade lived - bolts sheared, plate gone nout left... That cast hub assembly is a tad brittle then Frot... Cast Iron...? The flexing of the blades from root to tip, under the buffeting changes in wind pressure, seems to have snapped out the two bits of casting, as thats were the most force from flexing would be... The holes are close to the edge of the casting too... A quick fix to prevent catastrofic failer in future (Still think Cast is too brittle for that job, mind) might be to sandwich the rotor to blade mounting point, with a thin metal plate at the back like the one in front... then even if the casting gives the bolt is less likley to pull through... Just ramblings... Off to finish me drink...
