Did anybody watch the One Show on BBC1 last night?

They had a story about the benefits of lard  Grin

But the best bit was that they also had David Essex on the show and he composed and sang a ditty praising the benefits of lard  Cheesy

Perhaps it's available on the BBC iplayer thingy.

Well - day 107 on Lard power.
Just a general observation - we've noticed a general blackening of everything in Chernobyl... There is a very slight blow on one exhaust joint - black fluff can just be seen at bottom left this pic.

Dont think that is doing most of it though... there are no noticable leaks from Ivor - not really any smell at all when he runs. (pretty good acheivement i reckon).

Black!

Bits collecting on the fan cover...

Even the newly labeled up heating control panel is covered in dust  (Black! ... Johnny... )

Neat labels eh?    Roll Eyes

Must be the belts slowly destroying themselves. Getting to look more and more like a WW2 minesweeper engine room in there!
"Ramming speed!"

Ive been thinking about our potential impending Lard Zero situation and come to the conclusion that some legwork round the regions eateries is in order. Ivor's Lard consumption waits for no man..  Wink

I think you may have to look to "Beefing-up" the belts a bit Frot... Seems to me like you're asking a tad (Northern term, Que NI for full explanation & conversion to DIN & ISO standards) too much from the current setup... Undecided

From my personal automotive experience, I can tell you that the "Poly Vee Belt" system now used on most cars, is very good at moving big power for small belt size/weight/efficacy... Another big advantage is that there are loads of different sizes of pulleys just waiting to be liberated from you're rustic, local automotive salvage yard...  Wink

In arcane terms, the  ¾" one on my Ford Sierra wraps the water pump, power steering pump & 90A alternator pulley... I've never had one break or give-out, Full stop (.)

Think you already sussed this though... Grin

V belts are apalling for power transmission - and they slip for a pastime....

Efficiency of drive system, in order (assuming perfect conditions)
Chain (Bike chain) 99%+ have to be TIGHT and well oiled (oo er) but noisy, and dirt intolerant
Cog (Gearboxes) 99%ish precision alignment needed, but quiet, sealed so dirt tolerant
Toothed belt (cam belts etc) 98% old or new - but noisy(er), but small dirt tolerant, not lumps of rock tolerant
Poly Vee (Newer fans) 92 - 95% as above, but quieter
Vee (Older fans) 95 - 98% new - 93 when old.... sh**e.

If yours are that knackered, then you are looking at 90% efficiency - ie 10% of your lovelery lard is being wasted!

Guy 'n all,If I can just add a small note to that ,the application alters the efficiency, poly vee are particulaly good at going round small pulleys while maintaining good life and efficiency (wasnt that a magazine title ?) Roll Eyes
so for high ratio, high speed drives have considerable advantages over vee or tooth belts, and survive the poor conditions prevalent under a sierra bonnet amazingly well  Grin

Could you bodge something with an old timing belt and timing pulleys? There must be loads in a scrapyard somewhere. And even at the recommended service interval there is loads of life left in the belt

Ivan, List,

I have used 8mm pitch 20mm wide timing belts on my Lister genset with a fair degree of success.

Bodging car timing pulleys is unlikely to give you the ratios you need.

I spent £125 at Beeline.co.uk and  got the pair of pulleys (80 tooth and 34 tooth), taper lock bushes to fit my shafts and a couple of belts.

The same parts are available here in Songgang for about $17 !!

Today I bought 2000 LEDS (long story) for just £6 from the market around the corner - that's 3 for a penny in Engrish money.

Every other shop sells mobile phones, spares or accessories.  Take the UK high street price and divide by about 10 and you are starting to get into the right ballpark.

If the electronic goods are made locally, then they are dirt cheap and widely available.  Problems arise trying to get a battery for a Korean built Samsung mobile/PDA, or a power supply for a Japanese Toshiba laptop.

More from the land of the rising smog later

Hmm - interesting link for sprockety type things, that one..... Wink
I tink were stuck with our weedy v belt setup for the moment. The double engine sprocket was a one-off and is pressed onto the shaft. It is NOT coming off any time soon.. Smiley Would be good to go for poly v belts i think one day....
Got a blimmin wind turnip to repair first!   Roll Eyes
Windy tonight as well - typical! Undecided
