Yers.... sorry for the delay.  Undecided
Well the 'big' tools came out for this bit o tinkering...  Ooooh.

I was fully expecting to see the brush holder all charred and burnt away inside its brain... but no - its still there....

Hmm.. so i tested continuity from the back of each brush to the slip ring. 2 read open circuit and the third about 200 ohms. Even though there was plenty of spring left in the brushes.....
On removing the brush holder the problem is revealed..... not sure if its very clear in this pic but the brush contact surfaces are all sparked and pitted to b*ggery. Must have been a severe overcurrent situation leading to brush failure. The slip rings look pretty grotty too...  Cry

So i now have the blighter up on the bench and have discovered the main shaft is bent.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It has about 5mm run out at the end of the thread and about .5 mm right up against the front face of the unit. Bear in mind this mighty piece of steel is roughly 50mm (2inch !!) in diameter. Its not just the skinny threaded end section which is bent. I am quite speechless as to how this might have happened. I also must assume the unit is now scrap....  Cry Cry

I will have to contact the Nav Dudes in the week to see what they say but i am, to say the least, a little deflated by this discovery.

Still - ne' mind eh? Worse things happen at sea i exspect!!

would this work for us watery types as a pmg? Assuming the bend is roughly removed? (cue sounds of vultures... ). sorry - but the speed is much lower, maybe it can find a second life in a slower application? (btw - im not after it)

try taking the rotor to a motorbike shop - many of them have a press for straightening fork legs.....

Oh mate Cry

Might the household insurance cover it under 'storm damage'? Grin

D'ya think it spun itself bent (before or during the storm) or it got a helluva spank when it hit the deck?

Truly amazing 'dark forces of which we can know nothing' at work here.  But if it is bent, and was straight it has happened somehow. With one blade departed, and with the rotor running amok at high speed, Could the other two have applied such force as is required to do it?  *

Does it turn freely, as you haven't said nay before, I hope so, could it then,  all be countered by the new blades being balanced by trimming/weighting to give perfect equilibrium once again so it can reclaim free windfrotts once more?

Chris
ps
* The more I think on, I am concluding a resonance of speed, either one or two blades, and mass of turnip + mast would apply far more dramatic force than by said turnip colliding with earth at a fast rate of wallop. Plausible?

hmmmn, lets be realistic,if you fell 5m on the end of a pole ,and landed on your nose, would your neck(probably 8 inches of solid gristle) still be straight? I think the press might just do the trick,if you can get a suitable vee block under the shaft? or (seriously)you could try giving it a gert smack with a lead hammer?

GERT ,an ancient imperial term, rather than measuring unit, conveying size or mass.....as in... going into the kitchen for a cuppa;through the smoke, mrs installer sweeps the chickens off the table where they are pecking at her baking, while shouting''get thee GERT stinky boots off in my clean kitchen''

If I can I usually do

It might be possible for a driveshaft company or similar to cut it and reweld it then remachine it back to slide the bearing over. I have had several driveshafts shortened and rewelded in this manner. I would try it myself as I dont like letting anything go to waste..

Tried putting both nuts on the threaded part and 'tapping' it with the Frot sledgehammer - budging there was none.... that is a solid chunk o metal!
As i now have smaller high wind type blades to rebuild with i am pondering on a 2kw unit instead... I dont think there is any point putting the bent blighter up. Also i dont fancy spending loads of time/dosh to sort it out. If it was bent all along thats no good - if it got bent cos of the failure thats no good either. I am going to try and talk to the Nav Dudes in the week - see if there is a possibility of a (low cost   whistlie ) trade-in.

Ho hum.....

Still waiting for the word on bent turnip from Nav dudes. I am wondering about upgrading to a 2kw one if thats possible. Thing is - the great Frot Coffers are now tumbleweed world.... I need a cheap solution.  Cry

Have had a bit of tinkering while the turnip is having a rest....
My cheapo temp gauges from Hong Kong have finally arrived...

Found a nice spare bit of aloominum and bish bosh!   I luv hole saws, me!

There ye go - mmmmm... gaugey....

Wassat you say? 3 gauges, 4 holes? Hmm ok yeah decided we will need a third one. Plan ahead i always say!  Lips Sealed

Heh! They light up an evrything.
The small one is heating loop pressure, left temp is output from heat exchanger (before entering exhaust heat exchanger. Confused? you will be....)right temp is engine water input to heat exchanger. The 'hole' will be Ivors water temp. Eventually...

Chernobyl just gets more and more like Homers sector 7G control station in Mr Burns power station!   Cool

I luv knobs and switches, me. Fortunately.

goodnoisefella - is that a regular supplier or a one-off? I have an application that needs about 10 cheap digital thermometers with remote sensors - if it's a regular seller, can you post the details?
