I am using a slim Jim tank solar panel run etc. to pump up to my loft tank ..all set and ready to go BUT could anyone help here on how to/best practice/pointers on this subject (along with cheapest prices around Coventry) and if I need to buy into a test system like I see for pools, prior to me plumbing the rainwater tank in.

If you intending to purify the water with chlorine before use , can you not use a UV system?

Purification is a bit strong....this is for the toilets and my thoughts were good practice on cleaning gutters and the tank/tanks and something like swimming pool chlorine every so often, perhaps with a floating dosage thingymebob. ....UNLESS a 12v UV lamp, something like my son uses every night to clean his hearing processors could be made to fit and could be mounted in the lid of the header tank, powered via the battery/panel that runs the pump?

Chlorine first though.... I want this running once that the mains backup has proven itself, (all looks good there after 3 days)

Well a Ultra Violet light system is very simple to fit and can be fitted by the tank or somewhere else and kills bacteria as the water is being used. Plug in and forget (or so i am told) until the bulb needs changing.

If it's for the toilet why not have a bug killer in the cistern?

If it is arranged for the rain to flow through the store rather than just top it up with a drainpipe diverter the treated water will just be washed away anyhow. If it is a diverter then I would expect any of the normal loo systems to work.

Thanks ..more Q
I have a slimjim tank fed by 2 rain diverters then pumped into a 4 gallon loft tank break tank ...I need pointing at an UV system please, either tank could run one but the outside 88 gallon tank has 12v solar to supply the pump...Baz...are you saying normal loo systems as in a toilet hang on the bowl type thing would do this.

I see UV LED strips 0.70 Ampere @ 12 Volts Power Source on Ebay 130481654452, submersible and 100% waterproof .....what size is needed.

Could squirt some bleach down loo after having a dump. Wink

UV system is sized by how much flow you require but so i am told it is best to oversize UV, dont know if correct but i think it just means a larger bulb and housing the more flow you require.

The loft tank has a lid and S/S gauge overflow and the LED UV light could be simply added to the lid, powered by the battery and solar panel and at that draw would be a useful item to have connected ..as one of my issues is the battery not getting used enough, BUT is this going to work?

They dont quite work like that. They are inserted in to a highly polished tube and the water oasses over them but the UVis bouncing back and forth off the polished survace through the water........so i believe.

I wouldn't worry with the UV. I've got my rainwater tanks connected to toilet and washing machine. Just fed from rainwater via my homemade bodged filter. I squirted some Milton fluid i had to hand. The washing smells surprisingly fresh and no complaints re the toilet.

What filter are you using from your downpipes?

No filters apart from the integral ones in the diverters ....I can add some if needed.

See the picture here  http://www.navitron.org.uk/forum/index.php/topic,11463.0.html and I have the same diverter of the other side of the house.
