Someone over at moneysaving expert forums has a thread seeming to prove his Siemens electronic meter is clocking up his PV exported electricity as import. Quite a long thread but basically his suppliers have fitted a check meter which seems to prove that if he doesn't use all the juice his panels produce then the surplus gets added to his bill.

Interesting....

I also see that thread says you have to inform your power company.

Does that apply even if you are putting in less that 600 watts of PV?

Those Siemens meters are incorrectly programmed for a site with microgeneration and should be replaced/reprogrammed. As set up they are designed to prevent fraud.

Automan, you should inform both your DNO and your electricity supplier if you have a grid tied system, irrespective of the amount.

Just about all the chips that make up the measurement part of these modern digital meters have an output that indicates that the meter is in reverse. The totalling/display electronics can then decide whether to stop any further counting, go in reverse or count that reverse part separately from the import units. I suspect almost all do the first one.

But simpler units like the OWL can not tell the direction as someone here said.

My rotating wheel meter sometimes creeps backwards a tiny amount.

tbf, the installer should inform the DNO at least in the appendix 3 notification, and the meter make and model is usually needed on the FIT form, so for anyone being told by the dno/electricity supplier that they should have informed them, the answer would usually be to check their records as they should have been informed on your behalf.

If they don't know which make/model of meters runs backwards, then they need to add that question to their forms IMO, in the absense of them asking the question, it seems unreasonable of them to expect anyone to answer it beyond telling them the make and model of the meter.

eta - seems I've bumped an old thread after following the link from a newer one, ah well.

........do not forget if you have DIY Grid Tie PV, Wind Turbine etc & the install is not officially registered, its highly likely your buidings & contents insurance will be compromised and may even be invalid....
