tbh, I was thinking about the potential for a research grant funded project, but if fit were available then less grant would have been needed / private capital could have been used.

as a side project I occasionally manage consultancy work for 2 fuel and energy prof's, one of whom has a specialism in hot salt storage and renewable energy, the other (well both really) is an expert in combustion engineering / all types of steam powered turbines, and having done a bit of consultancy in this field earlier this year some ideas have been fermenting in the back of my brain since.

What about looking at solar thermal and a low temperature hot salt installation with a view of achieving a cost [and space] effective form of interseasonal heat storage. You would really be on to a winner with that.

FiTs in combination with any form of central government channelled grant will be impossible from 1st July.

The best I can suggest is double ROC's by making it part of a biomass system.  Thermal oil heated by biomass and solar  and then steam evaporator for conventional steam turbines.
