So we have no electric water heating or space heating and over the last 4 months our bill was 190 quid, 38 quid each.
Cooking, lighting and the ****** games consoles.
I think this is a disgrace, my flat mates are incapable of switching lights off and usually fall asleep in front of the games consoles, the computers are switched on first thing, if they got switched off the night before!

Just thought I would share this with you,
Hell in a hand cart, that is where the human species is heading.

Electric oven and hobs and microwave and kettle, and people don't eat that many ready meals or pizzas, surprisingly.

Cooker 3kw, microwave 1kw, kettle 2.2kw, toaster etc, there you go.

4 months, £38 each, not bad if you consider individual  usage in the kitchen for all.

That's 560 meals (i assume you only cooked once a day).

Cooking, lighting and the ****** games consoles.

A few weeks ago I set up one of those energy monitoring devices. Was pleasantly surprised to find that the 32 inch telly and Virgin V+ only register about 120w, also pleasant to see that my 'internet package' (computer, monitor, modem, router and low energy bulb) only come to about 100w or one old bulb. But the shocker was when I switched on the Xbox 360, on it's own ignoring the telly, it added 200w.

A real eye opener. Don't know if this is a Xbox specific thing, or all of the later games consoles, but made me think twice about all devices in the house.

We recently had our kitchen done, it was a complete disgrace before, but my wife patiently waited 13 years. We changed from a gas hob to an induction hob.

Are they (relatively speaking) as efficient as I've recently heard? I have joked with her now that as our PV went live on Tuesday she can only cook when the suns out - yeah, that went down well!

Daftlad - I know this is a really stupid question to ask you, so I apologise in advance, but do I assume that all bulbs are low energy if they are being left on a lot?

Some of the lamps are low energy, I am waiting for them to be on special offer somewhere nearby, and I will change them all.

Sounds like you ought to get a wall mounted paddle switched "bye bye" for each room ..simple even with no hands just  an elbow...

if they get into the habit in one room the green "contamination" may spread

OR possibly IF you bang on about it they do it to wind you up!? ..costly joke though DL

print off on a label how much standby for each unit per year... cost in beer or similar!

Bit it's 50 quid a month for a family of 5.

I posted it more as a social comment that young people don't know that things can be switched off as well as on!

This sounds very excessive. Assuming 14p a unit, you used approx 1357Kwh. You would have to leave a 100w light on continuously for a year and 200 days, or boil a 2Kw kettle continuously for 28days to run up that bill!

How does this bill compare to previous ones?  Did the electric company use an actual metre reading or estimate to calculate it?

How old is the electrical wiring?  Maybe you have a leak!?!?  You should turn everything in the flat off and unplug it if possible, leave it all off for a few hours and monitor the meter.  If you are still using energy when everything is off then you have a wiring fault.  I remember seeing this happen in an old out house, which leaked about 150W continuously into a damp wall!!  Of course modern installations shouldn't allow this, but worth a check!

Another waste of energy I've seen is putting fridges/freezers on the maximum setting, which leaves the compressor running much, much more than it needs to.  Also, good defrost and clean out of the ice/frost can help too.
