on aljazeera, the latest solar lights.
people living in shanty towns in malysia are making solar lights out of empty plastic bottles. they take a 2ltr clear plastic bottle and half fill it with clear water, then they add a dash of bleach to keep the water clear. they then fit a bright alloy skirt to flash it half way down the bottle when the bottle is placed in the hole drilled for it in the roof.
the finished job looks like someone bunged a hole in the tin roof with a half filled bottle of water, its a bit werid really, they even have the army making these outfits and selling them for a dollar a time.i guess the shacks have no windows and are very dark inside so the water in the bottle magnifies the light and defuses it round the room.for a while i thought there was a magic formula between the bleach and the light but somehow i dont think so.the bleach just keeps the water clear.there are going to be some sad faces when the rains come along and every sheet of tin has multiple 3" holes.

looks cheap and effective! Agree with you though Biff, I think the sealing needs to be improved unless they are after free indoor showers as well as an added bonus.

This one is a bit more switched on as a design, admittedly I don't know of many camera film containers these days... however the capping off seems more sensible.

go straight to the bottom of the page ((avoiding zombies along the way))  whistlie

..where there are some good basic instructions & a better video showing light output.
