If there's no insulation at all in the attic of a house, I believe there's some free insulation grant. However, if you don't want fibreglass (nasty stuff, really), are there any other options, or do you get a choice of "fibreglass or nothing"?

Npower & the Build superstore were doing ROCKWOOL. Started at £1 per roll then £2 per roll inc del.

£90 doesn't sound that bad for insulating an attic that has no insulation whatsoever, but what I was really getting at was whether you could have one of the non-itch insulations eg sheeps wool, polyurethane, polystyrene etc.

Even though i am a great over the top insulation man. I would never use polystyrene or polyurethane as they are just to much of a fire risk.

Sheep's wool has to be treated with some strange stuff to get it sensible and the mice, rats and glis-glis love it for nesting, and the poor old sheep farmer still does not get sufficient payment for his fleece.

Ivan, it costs more but you can get ordinary fibreglass itchy stuff, that comes in a muslin wrap. When I did my loft I was laying on it, in it, and under it at times, no problems what so ever. It does cost more, but easy to move, rearrange in future as you don't get clouds of fibres. The reduced 'intimidation factor'
was worth a few quid in itself.

Happy hunting.
