What i was planning ; ) was to visit Dick at some point, and do a 1-time setup using his cable.

As I only use it about twice a year you are welcome to borrow it for setting up your system.

Hi
one way to get a cheap generator is to find an old petrol set with a clapped out engine, remove the electrical end.

You will have to do some work afterwards because they do not have a bearing at the engine end. The armature fits straight on to the main shaft of the engine, usually secured by a long through bolt, I have obtained two generators by this method but have not yet put them to use. One will be going on a LTI that I have just got going.

Regards

Colum.

had a brainwave today

why not use a GTI made for a wind turbine - I'm assuming there's some around which will accept lower voltages ? (like 24 or 48volts)

and then use a bus alternator ?

you could wire whatever you're going to use to change the fuel rack/engine rpm to also power the regulator inside the alternator and increase/decrease the voltage that way ?

you'll probably have a tighter voltage range output from the alternator... but if you're going to modify the power curve of the inverter anyway that's not a big deal ?

and iirc, you can pull 2kw from a 24volt alternator without any problems :-)

no idea how to wire up the alternators tbh... but if you check frotters lard thread... there's a lot of info about it there :-)

Eh? someone say 24 volt alternators...? Yeah we did that, have a look here if you have a few hours to waste....   http://www.navitron.org.uk/forum/index.php/topic,1319.120.html
Alternator stuff starts near the bottom of the linked page.
If you're yanking 2kw out of one O them you'll want to be cooling them, you will. And you will not want to be using standard rubber belts. Minimum would be kevlar ones or some other over-spec'd solution. Constant slight slippage causes the world to turn hot and black!
They are cheap though....

Its only going to give me *about* 1kw (assuming it works - the seller seems to think it does - after listing he did some more tests and mailed me the results) but i threw £50 at this earlier today -

I know the whole company model was flawed, and that the GTIs were no good, but im hoping £50 on the PMA may see me right in the short term?
