An installation we've done recently has the electricity meter spinning backwards. Do we notify the DNO of this or the electricity supply company? Is there a special form to notify them of this? (and please don't reply saying 'don't bother' !)

Hi Ivan,

The customer ie householder should notify their electricity supplier not the DNO.  It took me 5 attempts over a period of 9 months to get my supplier to fit a new meter- they made it a few days short of a full year!

I seem to recall that my original FIT registration form from npower had a question about did the meter go backwards.  So I put the kettle on for a cup of tea and had a look at it.  It was going forward.

Two months later I had a letter asking me to arrange an appointment for a new meter to be installed.  After a few phone calls, I realised that no one, between the DNO, my FIT provider who was also my supplier and the meter installation company, was prepared to install either a smart meter or an export meter or would say who had initiated the process, so I ignored the letter. Finally, 8 months after the PV install a new meter was installed last autumn.  It appears from my second summer season of PV that my net import is higher, but the kids may be using more with laptops, games etc.  Who knows?

My take on this is that you just tell them what you have done and unless they ask a very specific question, you dont tell them more than you need to.

we always notify the DNO via, the notes section on the appendix 3 form, and they put a section on their reply saying they've passed this information on to the supplier.

Many fit forms also have a section asking about this, and I'd recommend telling the customer to notify their supplier, but I'd defo note it on the appendix 3 form, then at least you've let someone official know about it.

Thanks for the replies. I agree that it's a good idea to notify someone  - that way you can't be blamed for trying to defraud the utility company. If they take their time in dealing with it, then that's not my problem.
