Hi Guys

I am looking to buy a generator set in the 5kW 240v single phase range as we get a few power cuts in the winter months. Do I buy a Diesel of petrol unit, what are the pro's and con's. Also any recommendations?

Thanks

Andy

If its just for the odd power cut then a petrol one will be cheaper to buy & slightly dearer to run. But it wont be running for many hours so will be cheaper overall.

You need to be using it for quite a few hours per year to make enough savings on the running cost to justify the increased cost of the diesel genny.

Go for a Honda petrol - cheap to buy and start every time. Aircooled for simplicity.
I know they're not designed for 24/7 running and are petrol but for emergency backup they're ideal.

Aye, I'd go with the Honda option for your needs Andy, much as I love my Lister's they're a little OTT for your requirements. Though you could probably get a good second hand Lister for the same price it won't be half as portable and twice as noisy  Grin

Good luck, Paul
