Not so sure its about education but more about life style choices that make the differences-
That's precisely the sticky point: when I mentioned education earlier in this thread then that's not about gaining a degree in thermodynamics. It is very much about lifestyle choices, and how some small adjustments can make a substantial difference to our "footprint" or whatever it's called these days.
Solar installations can thus be seen as an educational tool. If you make the whole system install-and-forget, then you loose that valuable aspect of the installation. The principle that this educational approach works has been shown many times over, see for instance the many posts here about prominent displays of current energy consumptions, or the impact of installing water meters, to name but two examples.

Most recent example The main thing that has come out of this is that we are a lot more aware of our electricity consumption/usage and have reduced this quite a bit and obviously stagger the washing machine usage, etc to match our production during the day.
