Yup, definitely an interesting project. The TED video is inspiring, though some of the comments on the forum are less complimentary about the speaker and the organizational skills.

But there are lots of interesting 'DIY' projects - brick maker, gasifier, steam engine, NiFe batteries, various CNC machines, wind turbine, etc.

Getting them all built, designed and documented to the advertised timetable will be heroic!
