My new installation with a CS 12-2 Lister and Brush generator

Hello,

See my new gen installation with my Lister CS 12-2 running on waste oil with heat recovery from exhaust  I am novice with gen heads and have a big problem with my 3 phase brush generator.

engine running it gives 2 volts one 1 phase 11 on the second and 40 on the third...  and a lot of smell comes out this generator.

I received this gen from a friend and he says that last winter he has stored it in a very wet shop...   what can I do ? how can I measure the windings from rotor ?

Eventually have an 7,5 hp alternator to make the current, but it is not so easy to regulate.

I need my current for heating the cooling water with electric heaters in the home heating circuit.

Can I have some suggestions ?

Nice engine.
Sorry I can't help with the genny, I use a pma alternator on mine.
You are going to get a serious amount of hot water from that. My single runs 4 rads with ease.

What smell?

Have you tested the diodes?
(out of circuit so need removing first)

What voltage regulation method does it have?
(capacitor or AVR)

What condition are the brushes in?

After running 15 minutes the armature gets hot and little smoke comes out the generator, the brushes are good an free in their holders, the commutator is good . there are no diode in the circuit only 3 rectifiers and 4 diverters.

What's going on with the resistor on the left? Looks like the centre connection is loose?

Yes there was 3  resistors loose  ( broken slider).  I have silver soldered and repaired, and all the electrical contacts are good now.
The  winding on the 4 poles are good. I think it will be the armature shot or short-circuited ? How  can I measure with an Ohmmeter ?
No electrician here in my country.

My normal testing for motors is to check for a short between the commutator segments and the shaft, then check from segment to segment. I've never really understood the way brushed motors are wound, some seem to just have the opposite segments connected and some seem to have all the segments connected to each other? A book about motors on the shelf here says the adjacent segments will be connected to each other. Weird. The motors I'm normally trying to test are small grinders and similar which have died in the workshop. Your generator may be wound differently, but if you get your resistance meter and test the commutator you should be able to work out if all the segments/windings give the same results or if one section has an odd reading. I'd start with a probe on one segment and tests it in relation to each other one (and the shaft) in turn. Then move round one segment and do it again. A black marker pen is quite helpful for not losing your place.... Should start to become clear A/ how it's wound and B/ whether one bit is different. May help to draw a wee map of the windings as you test?

Thanks for the tip, I ask then...  lucky I have found this 12-2 in working state, long search after. I don't sell.

T have also an 8-1 but allmust be restored...  next year perhaps.
