Carbon emissions 'will defer Ice Age'
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-16439807

All this fuss about CO2 emissions / global warming, no need to worry anymore. It's a good thing after all  stir

Obviously I was being tongue in cheek - The authors on Radio 4 very sensible made the point that preventing the onset of an ice age is a good thing, but we've completely over-done it in terms of increasing CO2 levels.

oh joy. Watch this go round the internet with all he caveats removed...

basic point being that the next ice age can be expected at some point in the next few millienia, whereas the warming and consequent disruption to the worlds climate, weather patterns, ecology etc is happening on a time scale of decades / centuries, with ice melting and sea level rises taking a few centuries to reach their new equilibrium point once the warming stops.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think we could well have the dubious distinction of being the only cause other than comet impact of a mass extinction event to occur entirely seperately to the solar cycle since the great methane related die off long long before the dinosaurs.
