Hi stephendv,
I realise that but I want to run an inverter and 4 40watt downlights direct from the battery instead of converting 12v dc to 230 ac then back to 12v dc via transformers on the lighting side. This would reduce energy loses.

Ok, it appears as though the tristar has a LVD function if you connect the load as shown in your image 1, i.e. solar and load connected to the same terminals.

Thanks stephendv,
So that's sorted then, I add the light circuit as in image 2 then clip the inverter staight to the battery, as the battery discharges to a certain level the charger controller and/or the inverter will disconnect the supply.

If in image 1 it was to read AND/OR instead of OR then all would be clear.
