It sounds like a  way to  generate elecricity from  natural heat sources, particularly geothermal.      The problem with geothermal sources at present is that  very high temperatures are needed to produce steam.   Low temperature sourced  geothermal  energy  would be controllable and  distributed  so it could become the primary  renewable energy.     

It doesn't seem to be terribly efficient  which may have a  bearing on the feasibility  of extracting the necessary heat and that would also rule out heat recovery applications.    I wonder if any practical experiments  have been done yet or is  it just another
premature announcement?

Interesting energy generation method. Some way to go before it catches up with conventional TEGs though.
