 help
Just removed old lpg boiler and am installing ASHP. problem is got 80% lpg in tank approx £850 worth of gas ( tank was filled up with out asking or us requesting a top  up) when I enquired about them taking the tank away they said they will not buy back any gas left in it (even though they can and have at times removed the gas for tank maintenance) does any one know if there is anything I can do to recoup some of the money, and just to kick us when we are down they want £150 for the privilege of receiving £850 worth of gas! BP's service has been lacking to say the least over the last 15years with no gas for 2months during the cold spell last year but this takes the prize! I would rather open the tap, help then let them have it. any ideas would be much appreciated
Cheers

Is the LPG boiler broken now  ?
If not why not use it up and have the ashp done
in say May ?
Is the ashp going in the same place as the old
boiler ?

I can't see how they would put gas in your tank without some sort of contract to do that. If there was no contract then simply ask them to remove it and refund you. If however you failed to read the small print and your tank is legally filled with LPG you no longer need I am sure another smaller company would buy it from you. The tank however if under a rental contract will remain the suppliers property and should be removed under the terms of the contract you agreed to.

If you paid by credit card you could ask the credit card company to reverse the payment on the grounds that  the gas was not ordered.  However  if the terms of their contract allow them to fill the tank when it is empty then they could dispute it.   Also if is possible to leave the tank where it is they might eventually take it away without charging or perhaps just leave it. Again you would need to check the contract carefully.

Just because something is in a contract doesn't necessarily make it legal,  it may  breach existing law.    T

do you use LPG for cooking?  If so, that's an awful lot of cooking from a tank.....

No offensive intended here but I think your crazy relying on a Heat Pump as the only source of heat!!!  You really need to have a backup system of some sorts, never put all your eggs in the same basket and all that!

Does your neighbour use LPG? If so, can you connect your tank to theirs and let them empty the tank for you?

Is it your tank or theirs? There's a good market for second hand LPG tanks. Which part of the country is the tank located in? Autogas is around 78p/litre. Get a hand-pump and find an LPG driver or two. I get through about 100litres/month  - some drivers get through a LOT more than this - wouldn't take long to empty the tank.

Not that we're suggesting supplying motor vehicle fuel without any duty paid, of course!   Lips Sealed

Golden rule always suspend topups when in contract if you plan on making such a change.

I suspended topups well in advance of ASHP install as Calor or whoever can top it up any time regardess of how much is already in it.

We are trying to run down our bulk tank on the gas hob but looks like that will take years and years......................... Yet if we still had our LPG boiler it would be empty in a jiffy Shocked

Hear if this happening to many people....

Slighty of the main topic, but it seems that there is a general intransigence with BP at this minute in time and they are losing customers by the dozen.
My sister has left them and gone to Calor (47p per litre compared to BP 67p)because they wouldnt even look at the price or think of adjusting Even after 20 years with them, so much for loyalty to customers

I used to negotiate a deal for ourselves and our neighbours - every 3 years when contracts ended I rang around all the suppliers reps saying that I would bring 6 households in one go if they could do us a deal - we'd then get an offer and I'd ring the next on my list saying could they better this.. and so on. We ended up with some fantastic deals compared to the average customer and fixed prices for 3 years at a time. I couldn't understand why other people did not do the same as we quite literally  saved hundreds of pounds each (in fact this idea could be applied to a lot of other things other than LPG too if people would just cooperate with each other instead of just accepting being dictated to like sheep by the market - imagine the bargaining power enough people grouped together could get? It just needs people to remember it's the customer who is supposed to have the power, not the seller).   As time went by there were less and less companies each time until we were left pretty much with BP and Calor supplying only in our area, but you could still work the price down between those 2 even if not so much (neighbours bills all went up by  9p a litre immediately at the end of the final contract as none of them took on the negotiating role and I'd had it frozen for 3 years before that). As a reuslt of removing our central heaitng boiler and going to wood I cancelled all further deliveries - we had a full tank at that point and have been cooking on it for 3 years now! ... and it's still on just under 80% ! I reckon it works out at just over 2% a year we use - so you can do the maths to see how long we have left, and all already paid for. Really, it feels like it's free now  Grin

However, you do have to pay the monthly tank rental - I've toyed with having it removed to stop that but am put off by the charge -  Calor at least did say they would buy the gas back at the price we'd paid for it (I was hoping they would do so at the current price which is a lot more per litre than I bought it at, but you can't have everything - amazing to think that buying bulk LPG would give you a much higher percentage return over only 3 years than the bank! What a mad world), so we've just kept it on for now. I think I'll leave it until we move and then the next person can decide what they want, in case they wish to put LPG heating back in - though burning £20 notes does work out cheaper as a form of central heating than LPG !

Well what a day!!
Re plumbed the boiler in but out side this time (no room inside due to the ecocent and 300lt buffer tank ) raped it up in polythene and turned the fker up full. Now sat with sweat pouring off us tumble, not had the dam thing on all winter! what a fkd up world we live in! As for the rental and the £150 I intend to leave 20% in the tank which is over £200 this therefore can cover the charges and will be on the good side for them.and I will never use bp ever again! stroll on the day the big green eyesaw is removed.

Thanks for all the comments/ ideas gone with a combination of several ideas. the only idea that has been ignored is the green one.

cheers Dave
