has anyone come across  old timber in the wood that has lain there for quite a time?

I am wondering if there is any point in deliberately leaving  some of it out in the open   until it gets to the stage of being quite a bit lighter  (and therefore  a lot easier to cut with a bow saw)

Obviously  if the calorific content has degraded as a result of  the branches being left out for so long in damp conditions  then there would be no point but I always do use this timber if it is not too far gone and I wonder at what point the burning quality starts to go off.

Dont confuse lighter with easier to cut.

Most wood is easier to cut & split when freshly felled.

yes, its great for getting a fire going and up to heat.  Burns nice and easy, but doesn't last very long.  But the heavier the log the more energy is seems to have stored within it (dry of course!)  Nothing like a good seasoned log for keeping the heat up!
