Yesterday was a brilliant sunny day.Our solar arrays really produced the goods. The new 120volt array was pumping out 3.5 amps at 125volts which is a nice 400watts +,steady, effortlessly for at least a good 3 hours. This gives our bank a much needed good healthy boost while our 2kw is still in sick bay.
The other 3 arrays each got good results for the day.Today looks like another exellent solar bonanza and already the new array is up in the 400watt mark.
This is a different ball game to the wind turbines,No noise or flutter. No lowering or running around. All we need is an array that can work in the moonlight.
But when the weather is foul and the wind and rain close in for days, thats when the wind turbine comes into its own.Our 2kw performed flawlessly for a few years untill it got hit by lightening which could happen to any turbine. We hope to organised things a bit differently before it goes back up,such as water heaters, etc. We are getting there.Slowly but surely.

Glad to hear your getting there biff.

I am still waiting to have a perfect sunny day for our PV. Installed at the end of November but we have had some good half days.

All the best

A bit of sun to melt the snow would be nice. Still first flurry all season so mustn't grumble. er, well not grumble any more than I just did. Tongue

Yes, on a cloudless day like today this PV array is my idea of the perfect machine. It just gets on with the job, no noise, no fuss, the occasional wipe and it will last for ever. Wait a minute, it will perform less efficiently as the years go by, so does anyone know what causes that loss in performance and will future panels last for ever?
One thing I do know is that one day everyone will have PV.

Stan,
They slowly lose about 0.5% to 1% per year due to UV degrading the internal silicon junction.

Because UV causes the degradation they will probably last longer in the UK than California for example.

Beautiful sunny day with glare off the snow (only 1 inch) and gosh lordy mama 4.5Kwh today from my 1.6KW array. Oh If only my pockets were deeper I'd have another 1kw up tomorrow.

Hi Paul I thought it was less than that. The tale I was told was some BP PV panels in the North sea were still 97% of original specification after 20 years!

nice  one Biff,   we here are on the way out of the darkness .....

I know boring  - no  moving parts , but when you get too bored ,  look at the moving tail of your dog  Grin in front of the stove at night,

sure if more excitement  is required    think about other things to do with family members

'Yes, on a cloudless day like today this PV array is my idea of the perfect machine. It just gets on with the job, no noise, no fuss, the occasional wipe and it will last for ever'.
I was hoping that people might pick up on this comment because here we have the ethos for which all machines must stand in the future (and even Martin has seen the light today). It's obvious that we cannot carry on making 'stuff' that only has a life of a few years. To achieve that goal, machines will probably have to have no moving parts, only electricity. It takes me back to the Eagle comic of my youth with those wonderfully advanced sketches of vehicles that hovered or flew or both. Then there were the amazing cutaway drawings of the latest technology, which I soaked up.
I'm slightly weasel peed on cheap sherry but have you any comments on this future?
