Not sure if it's relevant, but in the field of remote control model aeroplanes, three phase control of DC motors recently revolutionised electric / battery powered flying. Search for CDROM motors on google to find loads of info. The DC to Three phase solid state controllers are not very expensive and very compact. Perhaps this technology has got into the pumps?
