Has anybody experiance of Rape Seed Oil  presses as I want to use virgin rape seed oil as an alternative to woodchip and have been advised that the residue could be used as a fuel in my woodchip burner.

John,

The seedcake that remains after the pressing still has a high calorific value, and would be ideal in a wood fired boiler. Some presses are fitted with a pellet die which converts the seed cake into pellets.

You might also be able to pelletise the rape straw - I know of at least one company in Warwickshire that is pelletising straw to be used as fuel.

There are a collection of presses available from China

Would the oil need any further refining to use as bio fuel in my old land rover defender as I do not want to have the problem of disposal of glycerin

Navitron has a oil press coming in on the next shipment in a couple of weeks time, if you are interested. I'm no expert on the subject, but I think you will need to remove water from the pressed oil before you can use it as fuel. Otherwise, it is ideal, with sufficient preheating for a suitable diesel engine.

BTW, the pressed 'cake' used to be very much in demand for animal food, but I'm not sure it is quite so popular now. Animal food is rather more expensive than fuel, so it makes sense to use it for this, if there is a market. It certainly is a good fuel for woodstoves etc, as there is still significant amounts of oil left in the pressed residue (up to 20% I think). Needs to burn rather than smolder, for safety reasons, though.

Ivan yes i would be interested as I have managed to acquire cheap a complete heavy oil boiler system with heated tanks etc. The burner is of the same type as your featured oil seed rape boiler therefore I am assuming it could be converted so the next question is what would be the output of the press and what is the price and availability of oil seed rape. I believe you get about 300 ltrs of oil for every tonne of rape seed. perhaps your press details would confirm this

To be honest, I have no idea. It is a cold press - they extract a bit less than a hot press. You'll have to google it to work out the difference, as I haven't looked into it yet. We won't know a lot more about it, until the press arrives - should be within two weeks. I'll try to get something on the new website when it does arrive (it's not intended as a product, more for demonstrations/educational purposes) - if I don't email me or post a reminder on the forum!

Which model do you have?

Believe freshly pressed veg oil requires de-gumming to allow use as a fuel in a diesel engine.

From rapeseed you will get 320 litres per ton cold pressing, 360 or so hot
pressing (heat the seed before it enters the press) BUT rapeseed is
currently well over 300 quid per ton ...... that's a quid a litre for the
oil in the seed before pressing it.  However you can get some cash for the
cake, 200 ish per ton (say 700kg for every ton of seed pressed)
For good land 2.5 tons/acre would be a good harvest, far less on marginal
land more like 1.5 tons/acre

peace n grease

I'd be very careful if considering the Libyan forum offer. It looks very similar to the adverts of a whole bunch of scam artists who post all over the net.The postcode in the listing points to private houses.

Could be legit - but I don't think I'd trust it!
