Author Topic: Freelander TD4 and Veg oil  (Read 9831 times)

Happy New year everyone

We are just about to change our car for a landrover TD4.   Has anyone run one on veg oil before. I ran my Kia with no problems but this one is a BMW engine and connected to an Auto box? dont know that the injector pump is till i look.
I have 200L of filtered yummy stuff ready to go.  I dont intend on a 2 tank system just mix it up a bit with some diesel.

I think you might find that the BMW engine is bosch common rail. You could be in for some expensive failure if you just put it in the tank.

One problem with common rail engines is they are DI not IDI engines.

if you dont know.. >

 DI > DIRECT INJECTION > has an injector that usually injects into a combustion chamber in the piston or similar and if the oil is cold has been known to cause ring problems due to unburnt fuel.

IDI > Indirect Injection > has a separate combustion chamber in the cylinder head that contains the injector and the heater plug and is ported into the cylinder above the piston so the fuel is mainly consumed in the separate combustion chamber not in the cylinder itself.

Another problem is they have an electric lift pump in the tank therefore you will need a separate tank system with fuel heater and a robust lift pump to cope with the viscosity of the oil. So starting on diesel and once up to temp swapping to heated veg oil in the second tank.

You could just mix it up with petrol / diesel or whatever and you might be lucky but it all depends how much you like to take a gamble on reliability.

Thanks PEMTEK looks like i am going to run a duel tank system then.
I ran a Kia Sportage for about 8 months on a high mix of veg, any idea if that was DI or not??

The lift pump wont be a problem as I can change that quite easily and i was going to put an inline heater prior to the injectors just for safe measure.
I thank you to point out the problems on starting up though, although we experience med weather in Derbyshire all year round. or is that the amount of jumpers i have to wear!!

Is yours a new FL2 TD4, or the older type?

New ones don't like cos of particulate filter.

Interested to hear how you get on.

Its the 04 model. I have done 100 miles now on 25 wvo / 75 derv and it starts and runs OK.
It was lumpy when it starts but thats when its just got derv in it, poss the glow plugs so i will get them checked first.
I am going to remap the ECU to help it with the diff type of fuel and put a fuel pre heater into it.

1, Which one do you have
2, Whats it fitted to
3, Whats the distance from the heater to the first injector and last injector
4, Was it easy to fit (as described on the box lol)
5, Would you recommend one.
6, Do you have any pics of the installation
7, Where abouts are you using it in the country?

Still running on 25%wvo and done about 500miles ish on it.
I found out that the Freelander has a pre heat fuel thingy just before the high pressure pump and there is a fuel cooler after the injectors to cool the diesel down after.
So the fuel going back to the tank is actually warm, not hot as I would expect it to cause condensation if it was hot.
The low pressure lift pump is easy to get to so if it fails its easy to replace and Mr RAC is on hand if it goes totally when I am out.
Fuel filter is under the car but i can use my friends pit to change it on a more regular basis.
I have found posts which show that it can run upto and or around 50% with no conversion but this is in warmer months. I have not found anyone saying dont do it it broke my engine yet although i did find one post that said his freelander kept breaking down but didnot say why.
I will update warts and all every now and then.

Yes it is common rail BMW engine with a Bosch injector.
Seems to work fine at the moment.  Everyone who I have spoken to or read said dont do it but cant give any real evidence why just you may break it!!!
Well if I do I will have to mend it then I will tell everyone not to do it.
