I heard it - sounds like they had no trouble scrounging recharges, which must be a considerable expense for the donor!

Milkfloat batteries were generally 16, 24 or 30 cells (32, 48 or 60V) and between 200 and 325Ah.

Even 60V at 300Ah (at 150% charge inefficiency) is 27kWh  - about £2.70 or the price of a pint.

For that you could shift nearly a tonne of milk 43 miles at a stately 15mph.

I wonder if the old milk floats contributed to the prejudice against to electric cars.   I can just about remember the horse drawn versions.  They moved automatically from house to house, could be possible again with remote controls but then the granny state could be upset.
