I just listened to Farming Today on Radio 4 (the LW love of so many ex-pats)

Briefly

Expect to pay a fortune for veggies.  37% of UK vegetables are grown in the Fens.  Last year a disaster for vegetables (don't I know), Wheat prices 3 times a year ago (thanks George).  Many veg farmers also grow wheat and they are going to switch because that is where the money is.

Fens also threatened by sea level rise (mostly below current sea levels) and flooding from increased rain.

I just dug my new variety Jerusalem Artichokes.  6 very special seed turned into 130 good sized smooth skinned ones in pretty poor soil.  No problems with blight, scab etc.  I wonder if I can turn them into bio-ethanol? Grin

Without wanting to start another Farming today thread, interesting mention of 'Great Land Use Debate' on 6th March.
