Does it surprise anybody that this is in a country where over 70% practice (on a weekly basis) the modern version of a Bronze Age tribe's mythology and about 50% seem to accept it word for word?

Critical Reason is the great unraveler of bullshit and it seems sadly lacking in a lot of Americans.
