The best source is obviously a free source, but I'm having trouble finding enough locally. It might be easier to buy an IBC of filtered WVO. Anyone had experience of this? What is the current price (I think Ken quoted 25p/l a while ago)? What is the quality of the oil? Any idea of the FFA titration level? At the moment, my WVO source titrates at 0.7ml of 0.1M NaOH per ml of oil- which is quite good, by all accounts. Anything up to 3ml is reasonable quality, but I wouldn't want to buy an IBC full and find it titrates at 8ml!!

I think Ken mentioned arrows Oils at around 25p/litre for 1000litre IBCs, but I haven't found contact details.
At the moment, I get about 40litres/week, which I turn into biodiesel which I share 50/50 with a friend (who provides the biodiesel). I really need at least another 40litres a week to run 100% on biodiesel. I've been looking locally for some sources, but failed to find any. Maybe I should start looking in Oakham? Here in Monmouth, many of the schools are bringing in pre-cooked food, or they are not interested.

It is getting very hard to find. I have a couple of pubs in the village who use about 60l a week between them. All the other food outlets are now tied to one of the oil "rental" companies. A couple of years ago people would almost pay you to take it. Waste with a value isn't waste anymore!

Yes I agree, Thats why I am looking for an external company to buy oil. I currently get between 15-20 lts per week which gives us about enough to do nearly one trip good. I currently put 33% in my freelander but am considering getting rid of it for something more economical and buying an old 2a diesel landrover for the farm. But my demand is now outstripping my supply hence looking to buy veg oil.

well I've drawn a blank. Ken said he'd seen Arrows selling filtered WVO for 25p or 30p/litre, but today when I called, they told me 60p/litre!! I think Sainsbury are selling it around 60p/litre, and I can buy SVO at cash-and-carry places for around 55p/litre - so I might as well use brand new veg oil at that price!
I know it's less economical if I buy it in bulk, and there is a quality issue, but it's the only way I'm going to be able to run 100% on biodiesel.

Hi Chug,
Yes, I'd seen that. She's looking for large consumers - my requirements for maybe 200litres/month doesn't really qualify for the quantities she is looking for. Also, the thread's been running for almost a year now, so not sure that it's been too successful.

Thanks Chug,
That's just what I need! I've emailed the guy requesting further information. Good to see there is still some affordable oil out there.

Unfortunately, it looks like the guy isn't selling the oil any more. Back to square one...

It's been a bad week....
A local pub has provided in excess of 100 litres of WVO per month over the last 2 years but supply has now dried up. Apparently a company in the area (probably the oil supplier) is now offering £2 per drum (20 litres) for WVO...... Suppose it would be possible to outbid but it would end up as a mugs game with the only winner being the pub owner.
So, trying to make up for a loss of 100 litres per month and also tying to increase supply by another 100 - 200 or so litres, 35 new pubs, clubs, restaurants, and canteens were leafleted. Only one responded and this was to get rid of some rancid, mouldy, smelly solid stuff that had been festering at the back of the kitchen for a few years. Very disappointing.
Will now have to personally visit and eyeball the managers and landlords. Maybe it will have more success than the leafleting; it cannot be any less productive.
Regards, Ian

Ian, List,
This is the first time I have heard of a commercial organisation paying the pub-owner for every can collected.
Previously most oil supply companies would take away the waste and charge the pub about £2 for every can collected.
This must reflect a major shift in the economics of waste oil recycling, and that it is now becoming a valuable commodity and no longer an undesirable inconvenient waste stream.
I think it's time to start importing those wood gasifiers from China....

Ken, agreed. When I first started collecting WVO a few landlords actually asked me how much I would charge them; the more naive ones even asked me when I was going to submit an invoice. Even though I know I could have made a charge, I decided to try to build a relationship with them in order to secure the supply long term.
What I had not factored in was the very frequent churn in landlords. In the end there was no real relationship. I do try to frequent the places and buy some food and drink there - and if I see the landlord or the chef, I buy them a drink too. Maybe it helps; maybe it doesn't.
Perhaps in the case referred to, maybe I just wait until the landlord changes again - but I suspect I will still have to fight with the new WVO collector and he now has the incumbent upper hand.
The bottom line is that, from a biodiesel point of view, £2 for 20 litres of WVO is low cost feedstock so I think this is just the beginning of the end of free WVO collection.
Regards, Ian
