5 april 08
my long-run pipe 30 SFC tubes on 260litre cylinder didn't fair well in the overcast conditions today, only reaching 47C.
However, I measured the temperature of the SFA panel in the garden (20tube 140litre) this evening - 69.6C. I don't draw water off this tank very frequently (currently just for biodiesel washes), but it is shaded for much of the day due to trees/house shadow.
Outside temperature at 9pm is 7C. If I remember to check tomorrow morning, we can see what heat loss it experiences over night.

continued from previous post:
The outside temperature dropped to 4C by 10pm, and remained so until this morning (even had a light covering of snow). Temperature this morning inside the SFA solar panel was 62.4C at 10am (and panel still in shade) and ambient temperature still 4C.
So panel dropped 7.2C over 13hours whilst outdoor temperature was mostly 4C.
ie Rate of temperature drop overnight is 0.55C/hour for a temperature difference of 66C.

Yesterday 15th. 30 tubes SE, 120L with retro coil, evening temps were:
Top of tank 80C Middle of tank 62C
After one washing machine load in the evening, then two showers in the morning the top temp was down to 50C.
It will be interesting to monitor the bottom tank temperature...I have a theory that a small pump to circulate top to bottom could provide more even heating if switched on above 60C
PS I split off the April postings from the March Temperatures topic into this topic.

Nice! Both of you over 60C. My system needs some updating. Replacing the 15mm with 10mm pipe would be the best solution, but no longer possible as burried underneath an attic conversion floor. I might try adding a panel on short piperun at front of house. Might even manage gravity circulation!

I am typically finding that on sunny days the bottom of my 126 litre tank is rising from around 23 - when I leave for work and 40-45 when I get home.Top of tank is piping hot and often boiler doesnt need to kick in in the evening unless allot of water used.
Not seen what the system will do in summer weather as installation went in late Sept.

Update on SFA panel (the one with the integral tank).
We've had no significant sunshine for a week or so, and mostly heavily overcast, return to winter-like days. Daytime and night-time temperatures around 7-10C. with a few colder nights.
Measured the temperature of the SFA panel this afternoon - 48C.
