I thought that tank piercing was a bit of a fallacy - instead the round hits the surface of the tank at high speed resulting in plastic deformation. This causes locallised heating, causing the tank casing to melt and molten steel fly around inside the tank. No idea if there's anything in that, but that's what I was told. Of course DU has a high density so can carry more energy that an equivalent-dimensioned lump of lead/steel etc.

Tungsten - when it hits armour punches a hole. Perhaps DU works more like an armour piercing high explosive round. However as far as Im aware DU is classed as 'armour piercing'. Perhaps it punches a hole by sheer virtue of its density alone.

I dunno - Sounds about as effective as the British Armies Rifle launched anti tank grenade - of cold war vintage.

The prospects of trying to stop a T72 with one of them looked like an ascension day mission (WWII German soldiers description for a suicide mission)

Weren't sharpened shovels the only weapon available to many British WW1 frontline service men? Things don't change...
