Solar heating - makes you feel good when you open the hot tap and when you look at your heating bill

I noticed the top temperature was 47C today. I think the bottom was around 40 at best. Haven't had any boiler input during the last few weeks, despite poor weather.

Yesterday was bright overcast all day, but top of tank hit 53C. Today, we had some bright sunny weather in the afternoon, making 57C throughout the tank.

End of day temperature has gradually crept up from 50 to 57 over the last week, despite mainly bright overcast weather and/or rain. Yesterday we had sunshine most of the day. Final temperature up to 64C from top to bottom.

My first hot full day yesterday. 3 loads of washing done through the day. 2 showers and a bath in the evening temp at bottom of cyl raised from 17 to 35c Not sure of top temp as I need to sort out a good way of securing the probe. temp at middle of cyl was at 50c. Still fiddling but am happy with that

Best day so far this year! 30 58mm tubes fitted on NWW facing roof (thought it was West facing until I checked with a compass ) 210 litre cylinder 65 0C at 21.00 Water has been drawn off all day for three showers and two loads of washing (machine) Thank goodness for the TMV.

Also my first day of full sunshine, bit disappointing. Turned off oil heating yesterday about mid day, at 9.30 this morning system started (20 x 47 tubes SW orientation on 30 degree slope roof). 117 litre HWT top = 35, collector = 26, bottom = 15. No hot water used, by 6.30PM top = 52, collector = 55, bottom = 44. Seems that fitting a heat dump and buying high temperature components was a waste!
I did actually buy 2 collectors, an extra one for my brother "outlaw", after finding out from this forum that my Newark tubes are probably NAFF, I advised him to get a Navitron system, which he did - but not fitted yet. So I guess if I add the "spare" 20 tube collector to my SE roof, maybe I'll get a better result!
Moral: Buy Navitron

Moral: Buy Navitron . Should be definitely don't buy solar collectors wind turbines etc from a company in Newark the story continues with another victim thats has paid but not received his goods and was threatened with legal action from the company for leaving negative feedback on ebay. I have passed the information to the Police at Newark and Trading standards. If anyone here has been a victim of a company trading from Newark please PM me. Tony

Well I set my personal best today. Hot and sunny, almost cloudless all day. 260litre tank heated from top to bottom to 78C.
Incidentally, the 140litre SFA panel I have in the garden, which was filled with cold water at the end of last week was boiling for most of the afternoon.

Gnidrolog,
Where in the UK are you situated?
I'm in a village just north of Colchester, Essex, about 3 miles south of Suffolk. I got interested in solar because we have no gas supply and the thought of using oil just to heat water seems so wasteful in the summer. My roof design seems ideal, a 30 degree pitch all round, so when I fit the second collector to the SE roof I can get direct light from sun up to sun set. Even with just the SW collector the system starts around 9.30 AM and goes all day - but not producing as much heat as I hoped. I did some tests on the 20, as yet unused, tubes. 17 of them got to just over 100C in around half an hour, so my guess is they are OK. 3 of them took hours to struggle to 60C, never got higher. So now I'm wondering if the tubes fitted to the SW collector are also faulty - tried to get them out to test, but the heat pipes seem to be firmly fixed in the manifold. So my thinking now is to fit the 17 good tubes in a new SE collector and see what happens. I really do wish I'd heard of Navitron and this forum before I purchased my system. Gnidrolog
